V. Richard "Dick"James

August 22, 1940 ~ November 29, 2014

Mr. James was born to Vern Ruben and Oma Wilson James on August 22, 1940 in Fort Knox, Kentucky. He departed this life on November 29, 2014 at his home of Noble, Ok. As an infant he moved with his family to Oklahoma and graduated from Norman High School with the Class of (1958). He attended the University of Oklahoma, Cameron University and Oklahoma State University. At OSU he received his Bachelors Degree in Biology. He was employed with the Oklahoma Wildlife Dept. first working with the fish hatchery in Norman. As a game ranger (warden) he was assigned Logan County and later Woodward County where he retired as a Lt. in 2002. As a warden, he taught numerous hunter safety education classes in addition to all other wildlife enforcement duties.

On June 18, 1961, he and Louise Boyd were United in Marriage in Norman, Ok. In (2005) they moved to their home southeast of Noble where he resided until his death. In his retirement he enjoyed his Grandchildren, restoring his (1949) ford convertable, hunting, fishing, primitive shooting sports, competitive shooting. He was a Lifetime member of the NRA.

While working as a Warden in western Oklahoma he discovered the buffalo bones that lead to the excavation of the Cooper Site at Fort Supply, Ok. The painted buffalo skull excavated there was a buffalo-calling talisman, believed to be the oldest painted design yet found in North America. It is on display in the Hall of the People Of Oklahoma at the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History in Norman.

He was preceded in death by his Parents, (1) Son Boyd Richard James, (1) Brother William Lee James, (1) Grandaughter Ruthie Menefee and his beloved labrador retriever Blackeyed Susie.

Those who survive him include his Wife of (53) years Louise of the home, Son Mark James of Florida, Daughter Barbara Menefee (Ricky) of Blanchard, Ok., (2) Brothers; Larry James of Tulsa, Ok. and Ward James of Texas, (2) Sisters; Leslie James of Tulsa, Ok. and Lisa Cowan of Texas, Grandchildren; McKenzie and Ryen Menefee of Blanchard, Ok., JuliAnn and Logan James of Yukon,Ok., Nephew Tom James, Niece Wendy James Oliver, a host of other relatives and numerous friends, and his loyal dog, Delta Dawn.
