John E. T. “Ed” Ivester

John E. T. “Ed” Ivester
June 2, 1933 ~ November 1, 2019 (age 86)

John E. T. “Ed” Ivester, died on November 1, 2019 after a long illness. He was 86 years old. Born in 1933, in the front bedroom of his grandparents’ home in Sayre he went on to graduate from Sayre High School, the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma City Law School. He was an avid reader, lover of antique cars, passionate Sooner fan, steadfast Democrat and an enthusiastic skier.Aside from two years spent in Germany in the 1950’s as a U.S. Army artillery soldier, ready to defend against a Soviet invasion, he was a lifelong Oklahoma resident with all but his schooling years spent in Sayre. He was an attorney in Beckham County for over 40 years. To say that he enjoyed practicing law would be an understatement. He did not go to work. He simply went to the office and did what he loved.

He met Sharon McCall in 1963 at an apartment complex near OCU. He could not keep from running into her, intentionally passing by Sharon’s window often. He finally sparked her interest and they spent a lifetime together. They loved each other deeply and used it to raise two kids, travel with friends and family and spend countless hours at OU football games. Theirs was a life well lived with good food, friends, the Sayre Methodist Church and a very large family.

Endings are not easy and this one was especially long and hard. The final years that could have been were not to be. Yet, difficult memories fade and the endearing man that was Ed Ivester lives on in our hearts. In the closing of a 1955 letter to his brother Cliff, Ed wrote “I read somewhere the chief elements for making a success in your life were 1. Faith in God, 2. Work, 3. Work, 4. Forget yourself and think of others, 5. Have a goal, 6. Get along with people. I’m going to take this as mine. Love and Luck, Ed”

He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Sharon, his parents, H.C. and Myrtle Ivester, one brother, Cliff, his close aunt Louise Coogan and his dear niece Jana Ivester.

He is survived by his children, Patricia Mann and her husband Richard, son Tom Ivester and his wife DeAun, grandchildren Shelby and Ryan Mann, Joseph, Jackson and Katherine Ivester, brothers Robert Ivester and his wife Ann, Jack Ivester, Ed’s long-time confidant and law partner and his wife Vicki, his close legal assistants Barbra Roberts and Gayla Splinter and many much-loved nieces, nephews, dear cousins and friends.
