Memorial services for John F. Hurley, 85, of the Falconhead community, Burneyville will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, April 11 in the Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Marietta with Father Oby Zunmas officiating.
Born November 23, 1925 in Fort Monroe, Virginia, the son of John Francis Hurley, Sr. and Mary Ludwig Hurley, he died Tuesday, March 29, 2011 in Mercy Health Love County, Marietta.
Mr. Hurley had been a resident of Falconhead since October 1986. A veteran of World War II, he retired after serving 22 years in the United States Navy. Mr. Hurley began as a ship’s cook 2nd class and upon retirement held the rank of Chief Aviation Electronics Tech. During his service he received numerous awards and medals including the National Defense Service Medal (2nd award), the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Cuban), Good Conduct Medal (6th award), Navy Occupation Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign.
After retiring and moving to Falconhead, Mr. Hurley played golf five days a week for 20 years. In addition, he was an expert at bridge and enjoyed bowling. He and the former JoAnne Lee were married in Dallas on May 23, 1986. Mr. Hurley was a member of the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Marietta.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a son, Raymond Hurley; and a brother, Hubert Hurley.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Patrick, Duwayne Price and Barry Price; two daughters and son-in-law, Diane and Vicki and Jeff Chavez; a sister, Dorothy Hatley of Silver Spring, Maryland; three grandchildren, Tamra, Cody and Mariam; two nieces, Annette and Susan; and two nephews, John and Matthew.
