Jane (Bond) Bonner Hughey
December 25, 1935 ~ 2009

Jane Bond Bonner Hughey, PhD, died on Memorial Day, 2009 in The Woodlands, Texas. She was born on December 25, 1935 in Chickasha, Oklahoma to Reford Bond, Jr., and Jane Humphrey Bond.

After graduation from Chickasha High School, she attended The University of Oklahoma , obtaining a degree in English. At OU she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and was on the Dean's Honor Roll.

Following her graduation, she married Gene Travis "Dusty" Bonner from Duncan, Oklahoma. They had two sons, Gene Travis and Jay Grissom Bennett. After Dusty's untimely death, Jane completed her Master's Degree in English literature and taught at Casady School in Oklahoma City.

In 1965 she married John R. Hughey of Weleetka, Oklahoma. John adopted Jay and Travis. They had a daughter, Melissa Ann, in 1967.

The Hugheys moved to College Station, Texas in 1972, where Jane began her career as an Assistant Professor in the English Language Institute (ELI) at Texas A and M. She was awarded a grant from the U.S. Dept. of Education to establish a National Diffusion Network program for the development of staff programs for teachers. She developed a measurement system and directed an educational testing firm, Writing Evaluation Systems, Inc., providing services to school systems nationwide. In recognition of her expertise, she served on the Board of the national firm Educational Testing Services for 15 years. She served on and chaired numerous committees at the University and in national professional organizations. She authored and co-authored three textbooks on the subject of writing.

She received her PhD in Educational Psychology, Research Measurement and Statistics from Texas A and M University in 1994 and served on the Graduate Faculty for Educational Curriculum and Instruction. She was appointed Director of the English Language Institute at A and M in 1998.

She is survived by her husband, John, recently of Oklahoma City now retired in Matagorda, Texas, her sons Travis Hughey of Houston, Texas and Jay Hughey of Los Angeles, California. Her daughter Melissa resides in The Woodlands, Texas with her husband Peter and their children Drew, Abby Jane and Kate. She is further survived by her brothers Jay Bond and his wife Jo Frazer of Oklahoma City, Myron and Janice Bond of Dallas, her sister Catherine Wootten of Chickasha, Oklahoma, her special sister Barbara Bonner and her husband Andrew Haswell, Jr., as well as many nieces and nephews.She was predeceased by her brother Reford Bond III of Oklahoma City.

Services will be held at the A and M United Methodist Church on Friday, May 29, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. with reception following in the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations should be made payable to the Opera and Performing Arts Society Guild (OPAS) at Memorials for Jane Hughey, TAMU Foundation, Attn: MSC OPAS Permanent Endowment Fund, 401 George Bush Drive, College Station, Texas 77840.
