Matthew Dow Hughes, also known as Matt or Mattie, son of Orville Douglas “Doug” and Linda Kay (Young) Valerius, was born March 16, 1976 at Shattuck, OK. He passed from this life at the age of 43 on December 14, 2019 at Woodward, OK. Matt attended grade school at Vici Public Schools and then moved with his family to Beaver, OK. where he attended seventh grade at Beaver Public Schools. At age 13 he moved with his mother and sister to Woodward and attended Woodward Public Schools. He lived in Woodward for the remainder of his life, working in the oilfield as a roughneck, on a rig up crew and in blow-out prevention.
Matt married Ashlyn Brewer in May of 2010 at the Methodist Church in Vici, OK. He married Brooke Laird in October of 2016 at the First Baptist Church in Woodward, OK.
Matthew attended the United Methodist Church. In his spare time, he enjoyed tinkering and tuning ATVs and he could often be found riding at the Little Sahara. He enjoyed being at the lake, and especially enjoyed skiing, slalom skiing, barefoot skiing, and boogie boarding. He also enjoyed music, horror movies, history channel documentaries, and the Transformer movies.
Matthew loved animals, kids, having a good time, family and friends, but no one more than his sister and best friend Dedra. He treasured his time with Grandma and that is where he spent his last days.
Matthew is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Orville Hughes and Lorraine (McDonald) Hughes; maternal grandfather Niles “Brig” Young; and step-father Gaylen Beers.
Matthew is survived by his mother Linda Valerius of Woodward, OK; father Doug Hughes of Joplin, MO; sister Dedra Hogshooter and husband Marvin; grandmother Geraldine “Jerry” Young of Vici, OK; niece Ashton Wederski of Woodward; nephew Devin Wederski of Woodward; several uncles, aunts, cousins, three step-daughters, two step-sons, and a host of friends.
