Ila Martha Hughes

January 2, 1911 ~ 2004

Chapel services for Ila will be held on Thursday, January 22, 2004, at 10:00 a.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary. Visitations will be held Wednesday evening from 4-8 p.m.

Ila was born in Reed, OK on January 2, 1911. She graduated from White Flat High School in OK in 1928. She received a teaching certificate from Southwestern Institute of Technology (now Oklahoma State University) in 1930. She taught school briefly in OK before she moved to Bakersfield in 1941. She worked as a cafeteria manager in the Bakersfield City School District cafeteria for 25 years. Ila also managed the cafeteria at the Sierra Christian Church Camp in Posey, CA. After retirement she returned to Bakersfield College and received an AA degree in Math while in her late 60s. During this time she also attended night surveying classes taught by her son, Wiley Hughes.

Ila spent the majority of her years following her faith and lovingly caring for her granddaughter, afflicted by multiple sclerosis.

Ila was preceded in death by her husband, W. D. "Bill" Hughes, in 1972. She is survived by her son and daughter, Wiley and Rhelda Hughes, granddaughter, Caroline Hughes, dear friend and sister-in-law, Mildred "Babs" Hughes, brother-in-law, Kenneth Hughes and numerous nieces and nephews.
