Jenell F. (Dykstra) Hubbard-Clanton

March 22, 1925 ~ January 18, 2013

Jenell F. Hubbard-Clanton, well-respected nurse, nursing educator, and nursing administrator passed away January 18, 2013 in Midwest City, Oklahoma at the age of 87. She was born March 22, 1925 to Ralph and Bertha (Taul) Dykstra in "Old Town" Albuquerque, New Mexico, the fourth of seven surviving children.

She came to the Midwest City/Choctaw area in 1929. She was an active member of the Nicoma Park First Baptist Church since childhood and served in various capacities throughout her adult life as both secretary and teacher in the Junior III Department, and she more recently enjoyed teaching her Senior Women"s Sunday School class until health issues became too great.

Jenell graduated from Choctaw High School in 1943 and immediately enrolled in the 3-year R.N. program at the O.U. School of Nursing. She received her diploma in 1946 and began a 30-year nursing career at University Hospital. While there she served in various administrative and nursing roles. She retired in 1977, having been the Director of Nursing Services from 1955 to 1973 and Executive Assistant until 1977.

After retiring from University Hospital, today"s O.U. Medical Center, she accepted the position of Executive Director of the Oklahoma Board of Nurse Registration and Nursing Education. Here she was responsible for state nursing licensure as well as curriculum and accreditation of schools offering nursing programs within the state. She held this position until 1986.

Throughout her long career, Jenell received many awards and recognitions, served on countless committees and advisory groups, and held various officer positions. She earned her B.S.N. from the O.U. School of Nursing in 1959 and her Master of Public Health in 1969.

With the demands of family, career, and church, she was left with little leisure time, but she did love to cook and was known to improvise when it came to some recipes. She was a faithful, compassionate, kind, dedicated servant and a role model for us all.

She was preceded by her parents; first husband of 46 years, Choctaw educator, Donald C. Hubbard; second husband of 8 years, James H. Clanton; brothers Dewey, Charles and Dick Dykstra; and sister Dorothy Simons.

She is survived by her son, Donald E. (Gene) Hubbard and wife Janice of Chelsea, Oklahoma; two grandchildren, Heather Hubbard and husband Erik Fritz of Fresno, California, William (Will) Hubbard and wife Suzy of Watonga, Oklahoma; one great-granddaughter, Farrah, also of Watonga, Oklahoma. She also leaves one sister, Luella Ballard and husband, Vern of Kansas City, Missouri and one brother, Tom and wife Pauline of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma as well as many other beloved relatives and friends.

The family would like to express thanks to the staff at Midwest City Nursing Center and Centennial Hospice for the love and compassion extended to Jenell while under their care. Memorial donations can be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, 825 N. E. 13th, Oklahoma City, OK 73104.
