Margaret Elizabeth Franklin Howard, 89, of Amarillo died Monday, April 1, 2002.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 6969 E. Interstate 40. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Howard was born near Olustee, Okla. Shortly afterword the family moved to the Roaring Springs area. She went to school and graduated there. After graduation she went to business school in Plainview. There she met and married J.L. Howard in 1934.
Three daughters were born to them in Plainview. The family moved to Lubbock where two sons were born. He worked for Southwestern Public Service Co. in Plainview and Lubbock.
She was busy raising her family, but was active in Eastern Star and Asbury Methodist Church in Lubbock. In 1952, the family moved to Amarillo to go into business with her husband's parents, J. Lee and Victoria Howard. Their joint business was Howard's Feed Store.
Life was a struggle for years as she and her husband put their five children through school and bought the feed store after his parents retired. Eventually they were able to live a comfortable life.
After retiring they bought a travel trailer and went to Arizona when the weather was cold in Amarillo. They made many dear friends and enjoyed that life.
Her husband died suddenly in 1981. She continued to travel to Arizona for the winter months. In 1988 she married Donald Adams. They divided their time between Amarillo, Apache Junction, Ariz., and Collins, Iowa. He died in 1996.
She was active in Trinity Methodist Church, Amarillo Senior Citizens Association and Pilot Club.
The family wishes to thank the personnel at Ware Memorial Care Center who made her life richer, more comfortable and happier while she lived there.
Baptist St. Anthony's Hospice was involved in her last weeks. Our deepest thanks for their wonderful care and compassion.
Survivors include her children, Margi Howard of Foster City, Calif., Nell Steele and husband, Charles, of Roberta, Ga., Carla Baker and husband, Gerald, and Wilson Howard and wife, Rita, all of Amarillo, and Noel Howard and wife, Myra, of Tyler; two sisters, Elsie McMillon and husband, W.B., of Lubbock and Gene Fudge of Littlefield; two sisters-in-law, Emma Franklin of Haskell and Norlene Franklin of Willmon; two brothers, Ernest Franklin of Littlefield and Jerry Franklin and wife, Betty, of Ajo, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
The family suggests memorials be to BSA Hospice, P.O. Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79176.
