Gordon E. Holland, star athlete at Enid High School in the 1930's, died peacefully in his sleep in Hilton Head Island, SC, on October 2, 2018. He was 97 years of age.
Gordon was born in Enid, Oklahoma, on February 11, 1921, the son of Albert Houston and Mable Holland. He graduated from Enid High School in 1939 where he was recognized for outstanding performance in football (quarterback), track (state champion - javelin), basketball, and golf.
Gordon then attended the University of Oklahoma, where he was a member of the football and track teams and the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. In 1942, Gordon left OU to join the Air Force. It was at OU where he met his bride-to-be, Florence Ann Holland of Ponca City. They were married in Ponca City on December 5, 1945.
Gordon lived most of his adult life in Ponca City, where he was active in the civic affairs and a devout member of the First Methodist Church. Gordon generously donated both time and money to many worthwhile causes in Ponca City. Gordon and Flo moved to Tulsa in 2008 and lived at Montereau.
Gordon was pre-deceased by his brother, Jack, and sister, Christine, and also by his wife, Florence. Gordon is survived by his only child, Jack C. Holland, and Jack's wife, Cynthia, both of Hilton Head Island, SC; his four grandsons, Mark, Scott, Eric, and Brian; and his six great-grandchildren.
