Opal L. Hogan-Burke

March 21, 1922 ~ November 23, 2005

Opal L. Hogan-Burke was born on March 21, 1922, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Opal came to California in the early 1950s at which time she worked for Mattel toys for many years. In 1967 she moved to Buttonwillow, California. From 1986-1996, Opal worked as Site Manager for the Senior Citizens in Buttonwillow. She really enjoyed seeing her many friends everyday. When she wasn't working she was fishing. She could stay out there all day long, whether they were biting or not!! In 1986, she married Moses J. Burke. He could tell some really funny stories you just had to be there! Their favorite pastime was playing dominoes.

Mr. Moses J. Burke passed away October 31, 1997 and at that time Opal moved to Bakersfield, California. Opal spent a lot of time with her granddaughters. The girls would spend almost every Friday night with her and on Saturday, they would go eat or go shopping! You could find them at Dennys, IHOP, Home Town Buffet or the 99 cents store!!! That was their special time with Grandma. She took time to teach them how to cook, iron, fish, play dominoes and nag!!!

Opal L. Hogan-Burke leaves to cherish her memory and celebrate her life, one daughter, Sharmaine Murchison and husband, Rev. Dwight Murchison; granddaughters, Kaleiah and Azarriah; a special friend, Nettie Cockrell of Buttonwillow, California; and a host of other relatives and cherished friends.

Everyone was special to her. I would like to extend a special thanks to her doctor, Dr. Albert J. Peinado and his staff. I would also like to say thank you to all of my friends who stood by me.

Viewing and visitation to start Thursday, December 1, 2005, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. with an hour of meditation to be held from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Chapel of Ruckers Mortuary. A celebration of her life will be held Friday, December 2, 2005, at The Peoples Missionary Baptist Church, 14451 Madison Street. Opals son-in-law, Rev. Dwight Murchison is eulogizing.

Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
