Sidney Nicholas Hockens
September 24, 1932 ~ July 3, 2016

Sidney Nicholas Hockens died July 3, 2016, in Sugar Land, Texas, after a brief battle with cancer. He was 83. He was born September 24, 1932, in Kansas City, Kansas, to Erwin Hockens and Jesse Hockens (n�e Bishop).

He spent his formative years in Atchison, Kansas. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1955 with a BS degree in geology. He served in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1958, obtained the rank of Lt. JG, and was posted for much of that time with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea. After leaving the service, he returned to KU and received a MS degree in geophysics in 1960. He married France Dolores Davison of New Franklin, Missouri, on May 28, 1960 after a whirlwind romance. They were married 56 years and had four children.

Sidney was an employee of Phillips Petroleum Co. for 35 years and served with the company at its headquarters in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, as well as in London, Denver, and Houston. He retired in 1995 in Sugar Land. He was an avid golfer, connoisseur of wine, and traveled and immensely enjoyed woodworking in his retirement.

Sidney was preceded in death by his parents, Bishop and Jesse, and a sister, Virginia Hockens. Sidney is survived by his wife, Dolores; two daughters, Valerie Hockens of Seattle, Washington, and Anne Hockens and her partner Brendan Kirkpatrick of San Francisco; two sons, Sean Hockens and his wife, Flor Hall, of Carrollton, Texas, and Nick Hockens and his partner, Joe Rappa, of New York City; a granddaughter, Charlotte Hockens, of Dallas; a brother, Erwin Bishop Hockens and his wife, Christina, of Dallas; and many beloved nephews and nieces.

A memorial service will be held at Sugar Land Mortuary (1818 Eldridge Road, Sugar Land, Texas 77478) at 3 p.m. Saturday July 16, 2016. A dinner reception will follow. In lieu of gifts or flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Planned Parenthood or the Houston SPCA, 900 Portway Drive, Houston, Texas, 77204.
