Mary Elizabeth Betty" (Neumann) Hitzman

January 21, 1926 ~ February 18, 2016

Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Hitzman, 90, resident of Tulsa, formerly from Bartlesville, died February 18, 2016 at St. John's Hospital. Memorial services will be held at 3 P. M. on Sunday, May 22,2016 at the Saint Simeon's chapel in Tulsa. Cremation arrangements were under the direction of the Stumpff Funeral Home & Crematory. Charitable contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Betty Hitzman was born January 21, 1926 in Tulsa to L. Murray Neumann and Faith Goss Neumann. Betty was raised in Tulsa, attended Holland Hall, and graduated from Central High School in 1944. Betty attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, graduating in 1948. While at Carleton she met Donald O. Hitzman and they were married in Tulsa on August 20,1949. They moved to southern California where Don attended graduate school before traveling to Sydney, Australia in 1950 after Don was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship. Betty and Don returned to the University of Illinois in 1952, then moved to Bartlesville after Don received his Ph.D. in 1955. Betty was an active member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. She worked as a commercial artist, twice served as a Cub Scout Den Leader, was active with Garden Club, volunteered as a Gilcrease Museum "Gillie", and was an active member of the Tulsa Shakespeare Club. Betty was internationally recognized for her embroidery skills and compositions. Betty and Don were inveterate travelers, visiting over 130 countries.

Survivors include sister Faith Jansen of Oakland, California, two sons, Murray Hitzman of Golden, CO. and Daniel Hitzman of Tulsa, and one grandson, Jeffrey Hitzman of Batesville, Arkansas.
