James Marlon "Rusty" Higgins

 Oct. 30, 1926 ~ April 20, 2002

SPRINGFIELD, Colo. - James Marlon (Rusty) Higgins, 75, died Saturday, April 20, 2002.

Services will be in Springfield United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the family plot by Rich Funeral Home.

Mr. Higgins was born Oct. 30, 1926, in Wellington (Collinsworth County), Texas, to Solon and Ida (Moseley) Higgins. His family moved to Olton, Texas, in 1927 where he received most of his formal education.

He then moved to Roy, N.M., to tend to the family ranch and graduated from high school. In 1946, his father bought a ranch in Dalhart, Texas, and he moved there to begin a long ranching and farming career.

In 1949, he met and married Mary K. Lathem. They acquired their own ranch in 1951, and he put in some of the first irrigation wells in Dallam County. He was baptized and became a member of Central United Methodist Church of Dalhart in 1959.

He served as an Amarillo Production Credit Association director from 1962 to 1970. He participated as director on the XIT Reunion Association from 1965 to 1967, and was in charge of the barbecue.

He was a former XIT Ranger President, a member of and past Exalted Ruler of the BPOE No. 2390 and received the "Elk of the Year" award in 1969. In 1977 he and his son bought a ranch in Pinedale, Wyo.

He divided his time between the Wyoming ranch and the Springfield ranch they bought in 1983. He and his wife resided together on the ranch in Springfield until the time of his death.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Marlene; a son, Ted Higgins; his parents; and two sisters, Nell Maria Redinger and Lynette Wilson.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Carla Deeds and husband, Ron, of Springfield; six granddaughters, Jessica Ploog and husband, Jason, of Dalhart, Jenetta Baxter and husband, Kurt, of Dumas, Texas, Ronna McAdams and husband, Kyle, of Amarillo, Randi Deeds of Goodwell, Okla., Cathryn Dail and husband, Les, of Lubbock, Texas, Christen Higgins of Plainview, Texas; a grandson, J.T. Higgins of Lubbock; and three great-granddaughters.
