Joe T. Hickinbotham of Point Blank, Texas unexpectedly passed away on September 15, 2022 at the age of 72.
Joe was born in Pampa, Texas where he began his love of all things Texas. He spent most of his childhood in Texas but graduated from Washington high school in Kansas City, Kansas in 1968. One of his proudest accomplishments was earning his Eagle Scout. Shortly after graduation, Joe enlisted in the Navy where he served from 1969 to1973. After being discharged from the Navy, Joe attended Kansas City Community College and earned his associates degree. In 1975, he launched his 34-year career at Phillips Petroleum Company. He started in the Kansas City refinery and later transferred to Bartlesville, OK to be in Applied Automations. In the early 2000s, Joe was fortunate to be able to move back to Texas as the Director Safety and Health US Marketing.
Even though Joe retired, he was determined to stay active and became an adjunct professor at Lone Star College teaching math. Many of his students were veterans transitioning from active duty to civilian life and he enjoyed working with them and guiding them as they made that transition. Most recently, Joe was active in his community by being on the City Council and was proud to be President of the Northwoods POA (Property Owners Association). In his spare time, when he wasn’t taking care of his yard, he loved spending time with his grandkids, dog, swimming, and going fishing.
Joe had a big heart and was a friend to many. He was proud of his service to our country and his Indian heritage as a member of the Choctaw Tribe. He will be greatly missed by all.
Joe is survived by his wife, Victoria/Vickie Hickinbotham; son, Eddie (Jess) Hickinbotham; daughter, Pam Hickinbotham; son, Ryan Harris; six grandchildren, Angela Keeten, Kyle Hickinbotham, Keegan (Margaret) Leth-Nissen, Haley Harris, Jamison Harris and Knight Harris as well as one great grandchild, Taytum Carlson. He also leaves behind his mother, Sara Hickinbotham; sister, Carol (Jay) Bond; nephew, Justin Bond; nieces Jessica (Jason) Tennant and Rose Hickinbotham as well as many other friends and family.
He was proceeded in death by his father, Eddie Hickinbotham; brother, Jim Hickinbotham; and daughter, Ashley Harris.
A funeral service is scheduled for 10:00am on September 28, 2022 at Cochran Funeral Home located at 212 Old Groveton Road South, Onalaska, TX 77360, with a graveside service for family and invited guests at 2:00 pm, at the Houston National Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5pm to 7pm on Tuesday, September 27, 2022 at the Cochran Funeral Home in Onalaska, TX.
