Susan Kay Hendricks

December 8, 1954 ~ December 1, 2020

Susan Kay Hendricks was born December 8, 1954, and began her eternal life surrounded by her family on December 1, 2020.

Susan was born to her loving parents, Richard and Wenonah Hendricks. She grew up on the family farm outside of Capron. She enjoyed working on the farm with her dad, cooking with her mom, playing outside with her two brothers and listening to records with her sister.

Susan began her college education at Kansas State University and finished her degree at Northwestern Oklahoma State University where she majored in art. She took her passion and talent for art and turned it into a lifelong career. She worked as a freelance artist, taught at Waynoka Public Schools for 10 years and made an impact on those who commissioned her work to memorialize their loved ones through her etchings and drawings.

Above all things, Susan was a mom and grandma known to most as Yaya. She was loving, nurturing and selfless. She spent much of her time with her three daughters, sons-in-law and six grandchildren. It was easy for people to see that Susan shared a special bond with each of them.

Susan enjoyed spending time of the farm, going on walks and traveling with her family. Most weekends you would find her doing arts and crafts with her grandkids. She was always up for an adventure whether it was riding a rollercoaster, parasailing or boogie boarding. She was a chocolate lover, avid reader, loved to dance, loved all things Harry Potter and was a true kid at heart. Susan was quiet and reserved to most, but to those who knew her she was funny, loyal, honest, brave, a fighter and described by so many as one of the strongest people they have known.

Susan also spent many years volunteering as a cancer activist. She was chosen as one of the Ambassadors for Oklahoma to participate in the Celebration on the Hill in Washington, D.C. There she represented Oklahoma and helped lobby to raise awareness about cancer and the need for more funding and research to find a cure.

We will always love you. You will always be our Yaya, Mom, Aunt Susie, sister, daughter and friend. You were so much to so many. How lucky are we, to have loved someone so much that makes saying goodbye so hard.

Susan was preceded in death by her mom, Wenonah Hendricks; her sister, Wanda Reed; and her nephew, Luke Hendricks.

She is survived by her three daughters, Marsha Pharis, Angela Norton and husband Marick, and Sarah Sherman and husband Brandon; her six grandchildren, Trevor Pharis, Megan Pharis, Avery Norton, Kelsey Norton, Sophia Sherman and Brooks Sherman; her dad, Richard Hendricks; her nephew Bryan Reed, who she loved as her own, his wife Dayna and family; her brothers Dewayne Hendricks and Lonnie Hendricks and wife Jordan and his children Nick and Shadow, as well as many other family and friends.

A celebration of life will be held in the spring.
