GRAVESIDE SERVICES FOR J. H. HAWKINS AT CLEMENTS

Graveside services for John Henry Hawkins, 93, who passed away at his home in Atwood, Okla., Saturday, January 23, were held this Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock at the Clements cemetery. The Rev. Clarence Harder of the Cottonwood Falls Methodist Church was in charge.

John Henry Hawkins was born on a farm near Clements, Kansas in the fall of 1860 and passed away January 23, 1954. Known as "Hank" by some and as Uncle Henry to all his nieces and nephews, he was the last member of the pioneer family of two sisters, Frances and Rebecca Jane, and three brothers, Riley, Richard and Lafayette. His parents John Wesley and Rebecca Best Hawkins and four of their children came to Chase Co. in 1857, two children were later born near Clements including Henry. His father died in 1864 in Arkansas while serving in the Kansas Cavalry during the War of 1861-1865, when Henry was only three years of age.

He moved to Oklahoma about 1900. He was a member of the IOOF Lodge of Chandler, Oklahoma, for over 50 years. A carpenter by trade, Mr. Hawkins enjoyed reading and working in his garden in his later years.

He was never married so leaves his nieces, nephews and a great group of friends to mourn his passing. He was buried in the Clements cemetery where his mother and one sister and two brothers now rest.
