Margaret Clare (Farmer) Hassler

January 16, 1941 ~ June 28, 2011

Margaret Hassler passed away Tuesday, June 28, 2011 in Guthrie, Oklahoma.

Margaret was born to Clarence and Rubylea Farmer in Guthrie, Oklahoma, on January 16, 1941. She attended Cotteral School and then graduated from Guthrie High School in 1959. She followed this by attending the University of Oklahoma in the fall of 1959 and graduated in May, 1963 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics.

While at the University she met Bob Hassler and they were married October 14, 1961. After both completing the University they left for one of many tours of duty where Bob served as a U.S. Naval officer. While Bob was an officer serving on board ship, Margaret was able during the Christmas holidays of 1968, to go to Greece to celebrate with Bob. This celebration coincided with a successful U.S. Apollo trip to the moon which the Greeks were also celebrating. During other of Bob's tours of duty, Margaret became a much sought after mathematics teacher in various high schools around the country. She taught math in Albuerque, New Mexico; Charleston, South Carolina; Portsmouth, Rhode Island; Monterrey, California; and in the Washington D.C. area. Bob and Margaret both retired while in San Diego and moved to Margaret's hometown of Guthrie in late 1976

Margaret attended Oklahoma State University and received a Master's Degree in Accounting in May, 1980. She and Bob then opened an accounting and CPA practice in Guthrie. Margaret also served as chief financial officer for her brother James' companies. She and Bob closed the accounting practice and retired in December, 2004.

Margaret was an avid OU sports fan. She was an eager and loyal fan of OU football and OU girl's basketball. She watched and cheered and kept up with all of the players. She also appreciated that the young people were terrific athletes but also strong academic students.

Margaret and Bob loved traveling in this country and in many venues of Europe. During l988 they took a trip to Norway, Sweden, and Denmark with special Guthrie friends. They also explored Germany, Switzerland, and northern Italy. Northern England, Ireland and Wales was another adventure. The spring tulip festival was the calling for a Rhine River cruise in the Netherlands which was their final overseas excursion. When not wandering Europe, the couple took adventures throughout the U.S. and even took the grand adventure of an Alaskan cruise. A road trip to Mt. Rushmore, South Dakota, was taken a few years ago with favorite neighborhood buddies. This trip to see the presidents was one that Margaret had wanted and anticipated for years.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents. Clarence Farmer passed away in 1982 and Rubylea Farmer passed away in 2005.

Margaret is survived by her husband, Bob of the home. They had a marriage of nearly 50 years. Other surviving family include her older brother, James Farmer, who lives in Washington D.C. and her younger sister, Sandra Farmer Emerson, of Oklahoma City. She has one niece and two nephews along with an extended family of many aunts, uncles, cousins, and a host of friends and loved ones.

There will be a "Remembering Margaret" memorial and visitation for friends in the parlor of the First United Presbyterian Church in Guthrie on Monday, July 11, 2011 at 10 oclock a.m. In lieu of flowers the family would request a donation to the First United Presbyterian Church of Guthrie or the University of Oklahoma Scholarship Fund in her memory.

Arrangements are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.
