Irene Hartline was a seventy year resident of Kern County.
Mom was born in Coalgate, Oklahoma, March 8, 1916, and passed away peacefully in Bakersfield, CA, October 5, 2005. She was from a large family although she was the only child of the union of Benedict C. Kelly and Mattie Ella Yancey. Mom married our dad, J. C. (Bud) Hartline, on September 3, 1930 and together they raised six children.
A child of the depression and dust bowl she followed Pappy to California as soon as he found work and here they stayed. Mom was a superb cook. Her biscuits and gravy would melt in your mouth, as would her chicken fried steak, short ribs and just about everything she set her mind to fix. Her pies were ambrosia especially chocolate meringue. Cooking was her vocation and she loved it.
Mom was very proud of having cooked for a lot of entertainers many of whom are now in the Country Music Hall of Fame. Her favorite story was when she cooked at the famous Blackboard Cafeacute; and having Buck Owens favorite breakfast always ready for him when the band finished playing for the night. Buck acknowledged this on the occasion of her eightieth birthday celebrated at the Crystal Palace.
Pappy predeceased Irene in 1992 after almost 62 years together. Her son, Sergeant Donald G. Hartline USMC in 1961, first grandchild, Diana Jean Hartline in 1951, her loving daughter-in-law, Phyllis Drouin Hartline in 2000 as well as her parents and many siblings.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Frank, Sr. and Bernie Hartline, Bertha Lee (Sis) Mahan, Doug and Donna Hartline, Gene and Lynn Hartline and Danny Hartline, 18 grandchildren, Lots and lots of great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, more nieces and nephews than you can count and many younger brothers and sisters.
Mom demanded and expected extra effort but was always ready to put her arms around us to help heal the hurt. Now all her hurts and scars are gone and she is unblemished and dressed impeccably as always and in the loving arms of our Lord.
