Hugh Harrison died peacefully on June 1, 2018 at Journey Home in Bartlesville with his wife, Virginia nearby. Hugh was born June 24, 1948 in New Orleans, Louisiana to Simon Lewis, Sr. and Louise Harrison Lewis. He spent all of his life in New Orleans until Hurricane Katrina destroyed everything he and Virginia owned in 2005. Together with thousands of others they fled the flood waters by way of the Astrodome in Houston and then on to Camp Gruber near Muskogee, Oklahoma.
St. Luke's Episcopal Church responded to the tragedy by sponsoring several families, including Hugh and Virginia, and bringing them to Bartlesville. As members of the parish and the community rallied around them to help them start life over again, they quickly won the hearts of everyone they met. Hugh was eager to work and soon became a valued employee of United Linens. Later he worked at CONCERN and St. Luke's.
Hugh had the heart of a servant and consistently gave himself to help others. And, he did so with a big smile and loving spirit. He faithfully served as an usher at St. Luke's and enjoyed setting up the church for special events. His laugh was always huge and contagious. His voice was often heard above others during the worship liturgy as he loved to praise God. In October of 2015 Hugh was recognized by the people of St. Luke's as a "Prism of Christ" because people saw Christ in him as he served the church and the community.
Hugh will be missed. He touched the lives of many people in his thirteen years with us. We will celebrate his life and faith at St. Luke's Episcopal Church on Tuesday, June 5th, at 11:00 a.m.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia; his sons, Hugh Jr. Harrison and Stephen Harrison; daughters, Tonya Harrison and Tiko Harrison Ary; sisters, Audrey Jackson and Rita Harrison Pate; and grandchildren, Desiree Ary and Jaylen Ary.
Memorial donations on behalf of Hugh's wife, Virginia, may be sent to St. Luke's Episcopal Church at 210 SE Ninth Street, Bartlesville, Oklahoma 74003.
