Charles passed away peacefully from this life on Tuesday, December 17th at the age of 90.
Charles was born in Stillwater, Oklahoma on July 6, 1934 to V.C. & Bernidene (Moore) Harper. He was raised in Cushing, Oklahoma and attended Cushing Public Schools where he excelled at football and track (placing 4th in the State).
On May 22, 1953; Charles married Shirley Ann Todd of Drumright. Together, they had 2 children, Tammy and Tony.
Charles went to school and played college football in Kansas in 1955.
Charles was introduced to and intrigued by trains at a young age as his father worked for the railroad, and in 1956 he started working for the Katy Railroad.
Later, he started working at Drumright Public Schools in the maintenance department. This job brought him much joy from his co-workers to the students he was surrounded by that he met as kindergartners and watched graduate, go off to college, and raise families. Charles retired from DPS in 1998. He and Shirley remained living in Drumright until her passing in 2008.
In the 1980s, if you saw a business sign or even billboard in Drumright or the surrounding areas, it was most likely painted by Charles. His artistic talent could also be seen in local gymnasiums, as well as personal collections of family and friends.
On June 2, 2012; Charles married Elaine Rainwater and they lived in Drumright until his passing.
Charles is survived by his wife Elaine of Drumright; daughter, Tammy Hutcheson and her husband, Gary of Yulee, Florida; son, Tony Harper and his wife, Dayna of Drumright; stepdaughter, Susan Wilson of Drumright, stepson, Andy Rouse of Drumright; granddaughter Heather King and great grandchildren Joshua & Elizabeth of Jacksonville, Florida; grandson, Andrew Hutcheson & his wife, Wendy of Palm Coast, Florida; grandson, Austin Cravens & his wife, Heather & great grandson, Rowdy of Cushing; granddaughter, Elizabeth Jackson and great granddaughters Scarlett & Violet of Drumright; sister, Sue Adams & her husband, Mike of Oklahoma City; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other cherished family members.
Charles loved God, his family, his friends, his community, his coworkers and the Oklahoma State Cowboys and University of Oklahoma Sooners.
Charles was proceeded in death by his wife, Shirley; Parents V.C & Bernidene; and his Brother Verl; as well as many other loved ones.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his name to the Cushing Alumni Association or Drumright Alumni Association. Both schools were integral parts of his life. If you would like, monetary donations in his name can also be made to the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine Willed Body Program.
