Opal (McDonnell) Harpe

October 23, 1910 ~ December 28, 2003

Graveside services will be held at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Camarillo, CA, Friday, January 2, 2004, at 11 a.m.

Opal was born October 23, 1910, in Washington, Oklahoma to John Thomas and CoraBelle McDonnell. Grandma passed away peacefully at Oakdale Heights on December 28, 2003, at age 93, with her granddaughter by her side.

Grandma was raised in Lamesa, Texas with two sisters and three brothers. As a young woman she moved to Amarillo, Texas to work for a law firm. In 1945 she moved to Hawaii to work for the Federal Government. It is there where she met and married Wade Harpe and had one daughter, Melanie. The family moved to Ventura County in 1956. Grandma and Grandpa worked at Port Hueneme Naval Base where grandma worked for the Civil Service and Grandpa was a Sea Bee.

Grandma resided in Camarillo for more than 30 years. In 1997, her granddaughters moved her to Bakersfield. The past 5 years Stacy and her family lived and cared for Grandma. A little over a year ago she moved to Oakdale Heights Assisted Living Facility.

Grandma had strong faith in the Lord. She read the Bible Faithfully and shared her faith with her granddaughters. She spent most of her retired years devoted to Dani and Stacy, her twin granddaughters. Grandma loved shopping at the Naval Base, eating fried food and sweets, gardening, and spending time with her great grandchildren.

Opal was preceded in death by her husband, Wade Harpe; parents, John Thomas and CoraBelle; two sisters, Louise and Verlane; and three brothers, Lloyd, Millard, and Heston.

She leaves her granddaughters, Stacy and Danielle Froehlich of Bakersfield; their husbands, Jasen and Jim Froehlich; great grandchildren "her sugars." Wade and Jake Froehlich and Luke Froehlich; one daughter, Melanie Harpe of Atascadero. She also leaves behind her dear friends and family.

Grandma was our rock, our safe haven. Our love for her was endless. She provided us with stability and made us who we are today. Thank you Grandma.

Your love will remain with Stacy and me until we meet again. You will be greatly missed.

The family would like to thank Dr. H. Kothary and Dr. Ashraf for taking good care of our Grandma. Thanks to Oakdale Heights for their support and wonderful care. Special thanks to the staff at Oakdale Heights Memory Care for their outstanding care of Grandma her last week. Many thanks to Chris Etheringhton at Oakdale Heights for everything he has done for our family. Grandma was in Hoffmann Hospice care her final week. The family asks for Grandparents to make a special bond with their grandchildren. It's an incredible relationship!

We had 31 memorable years together!
