Laddie Jack Harp, 85, passed away the morning of February 25, 2012 in Fairview, OK. Laddie was the son of Percy F. and Thelma T. Harp. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Dene T. Harp. Laddie leaves behind his wife of 63 years, Jean J. Harp, his two sons, Ted Harp of Fairview, and John and Laurie Harp of Fort Worth, Texas, two daughters, Jena (Harp)and Mike Hughes of Fairview, and Jessie (Harp) and Jim Whitlock of Monument, Colorado. Laddie also had 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Laddie was born and raised in Fairview, OK, where he excelled as a track and football athlete. Laddie still holds the Fairview High School record in the 100 yard dash, a 9.6 he ran in 1941. That earned him the nickname, the "Fairview Flash". He attended the University of Oklahoma on a track scholarship and also played football for the Sooners. He graduated with a degree in Petroleum Engineering in 1949 and went to work for The Western Company of North America for his entire 44 year career. Laddie and Jean were wed on August 21, 1948. His work in the petroleum industry moved them to many places, including Midland, TX, Borger, TX, Wichita Falls, TX, Fort Worth, TX, Edmond, OK, and Denver, CO. A stalwart figure in the petroleum industry and the petroleum engineering profession, Laddie was a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, recognized as a Legion of Honor Member. He pioneered many of the fracking procedures still in use today throughout the Permian Basin and Hugoton Fields. It did not matter where the family lived; Laddie was always diligent in finding a local church to be a part of with his family. He taught and served in many churches over the years and was faithful in those endeavors his entire life. His passions were his love for Jean, love for his family, and most of all his love of studying and understanding the Bible. Among his hobbies, he enjoyed golfing, gardening, fishing, and furniture restoration. As a former Sooner football player he always took delight in their victories, particularly over Texas and Nebraska!
A memorial service celebrating Laddie's life and homecoming will be held at the Fairview First United Methodist Church on Wednesday, February 29, 2012. Services will begin at 10:30 AM led by Pastor Rich Redinger.
There will be no graveside service, but a private consecration service will be conducted by the family at a later date.
