Service for Henry W. Harnish, DO, (anesthesiologist, Enid, Okla.), 85, will be held privately at a later date under direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.

He was born March 8, 1929, to the Rev. Jacob T. and Ella W. (Weaver) Harnish on a farm in Lancaster County, Pa., and passed away Thursday, Sept. 25, 2014, in Enid. He was the youngest of 11 children raised in a Mennonite family.

He graduated from Lancaster High School in 1947. Motivated by his brother, who was eight years older but closest to him in age, he went on to complete his undergraduate degree at Goshen College in Goshen, Ind., in 1952. He earned his osteopathic medicine degree at Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1959.

He married Orpha Grayhill, and they had one daughter. Later, he married Lorene E. Peters.

He completed a general practice and anesthesiology internship and postdoctoral training in 1960 at what is now OSU Medical Center in Tulsa, Okla. He practiced anesthesia and had a private practice in Tulsa until 1974 and then moved to Enid, Okla., where he practiced anesthesia at Integris Bass Baptist, St. Mary�s Regional and the Surgery Center.

In June 1981, he was elected president of Oklahoma Foundation for Peer Review Board of Directors. Also in 1981, as an attending anesthesiologist at Enid Memorial Hospital, he served as vice president of the Board of Directors at Enid Memorial Hospital and chair of the hospital�s Intern/Extern Committee and Medical Records Committee. He served on numerous committees and bureaus within Oklahoma Osteopathic Association (OOA), leading up to his presidency of the organization in 1984-1985.

During his presidency, he was appointed to the Advisory Committee on Medical Care for Public Assistance Recipients. In 1985, he received the OOA�s prestigious Doctor of the Year award.

He was involved as a member of the Medical Advisory Board to BlueCross BlueShield of Oklahoma and was an adjunct faculty member at Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine (OSU-CHS COM).

He was a member of the OSU Centennial Celebration Committee in 1990.

In 1999, he received the OOA Life Member designation, and he is also a life member of the American Osteopathic Association. After retirement, he volunteered at Enid Community Clinic, Hospice Circle Of Love and Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center.

He has enjoyed golf, fishing in Canada and Alaska with family and friends and flying his own plane for many years, and was know to be a very competitive gin rummy player.

He is survived by his wife, Lorene; his daughters, Jill Lawrence and husband Tim of Anchorage, Alaska, and Toni (Payne) Klein and husband Jamie of Denver, Colo.; son, Chris Payne of Fox Fire Village, N.C.; two grandchildren, Morgan and Ryan Klein; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and six sisters.

Memorials may be given to Hospice Circle of Love or Central Christian Church of Enid, with Brown-Cummings serving as custodian of funds. Condolences may be made to the family at Brown-Cummings.com.
