Theda Aurlene (Cates) Hanus

Theda Aurlene (Cates) Hanus
December 4, 1922 ~ January 13, 2013

Theda Aurlene Hanus, 90, of Midwest City died January 13, 2013 in Midwest City. She was born December 4, 1922 in Oklahoma City to Jasper Ross and Mary Leneive Cates.

Theda was raised in Oklahoma City during the dust bowl and "the great depression", and graduated from Central High School. She joined the Womens" Army Corp (WAC) in 1944 to "free a man to fight" during WWII. She was stationed at Spence Field in Moultrie, Georgia where she operated communications equipment. There she met Raymond John Hanus, a staff sergeant in the Army Air Corp, and after a brief courtship were married on April 19, 1945. After the war they eventually settled permanently in Oklahoma. Soon after Ray began working at Tinker AFB, in 1951, they purchased a home in the "original square mile" of Midwest City where they lived the rest of their lives. For several years

Theda occupied herself as a homemaker and mother of five. She was active in St. Philip Neri Alter society for many years. She volunteered her outstanding typing skills for the church and school and was a den mother for the original Pack 122 of St. Philip Neri School. As the children grew up she resumed her working career outside the home, first part-time for the IRS processing center, then full time at the Armed Forces Examining and Entrance Station, and finally at the US Navy recruiting Station. After retiring she and Ray enjoyed traveling around the country in their RV, volunteering at St Philip Neri School Cafeteria, and following the exploits of their growing family. Theda is remembered by her family as a very positive, extraordinarily patient person and compassionate listener.

Theda is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Raymond John Hanus, brother Ross Cates and grandson Joseph Saindon.

Theda is survived by two brothers: Gene Cates of Norman, OK and Richard Cates of Noble, OK; two sons: David Raymond of Midwest City and James Philip of Rowlette, TX; three daughters: Judith Ann of Lynchburg, VA, Jane Fairchild of Midwest City, and Mary Claire Saindon of Oklahoma City; nine grandchildren, 13 great- grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Philip Neri School Development Fund.
