Bill Don Gwartney, 78, went to be with his Lord and Savior on March 27, 2023. He was born on January 5, 1945, to Jack & Rachel (Allen) Gwartney in Elk City, OK. He graduated from Hammon High School and married his sweetheart, Sherry Bradford. They enjoyed 57 wonderful years of marriage before her death in 2021.
Bill graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University with a degree in Healthcare Administration. He went on to get his master’s degree from George Washington University in Washington D.C.. A proud Army veteran, Bill served a tour in Vietnam, achieving the rank of Captain. After leaving the military Bill had a long, successful career in Healthcare Administration, serving as Vice President of the OK Hospital Association, President of the Kansas City Area Hospital Association and ending his career as President of Voluntary Hospitals of America – Oklahoma, Arkansas and the West Coast. Bill was a faithful member of North Pointe Baptist Church, and his faith and walk with the Lord was very important to him. He taught Sunday School in the many churches he was a part of. Bill also served on many governance boards including the Boy Scouts of America, Great Plains Regional Medical Center, and Oklahoma Baptist University. He was very selfless, always putting others first. He led by example. Bill was a handy man, was very creative and had an active imagination. He loved to paint, he enjoyed photography and traveling and was a big Disney fan. “Papa” to his grandchildren, Baylee and Jackson, he was very intentional with them, and they were his whole world.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Sherry; his parents, Jack and Rachel Gwartney; in-laws, Claude and Laura Bradford; sister-in-law, Mary Gwartney; nephew, Steve Ross; and brother-in-law, Edgar Ross. He is survived by his son, Aaron (Christy) Gwartney; grandchildren, Baylee Gwartney and Jackson Gwartney; brother, Jerry Gwartney; sister-in-law, Claudette Ross; nephews, Mark (Sonja) Gwartney, Tim Gwartney, Krista Gwartney, Jeff (Amy) Gwartney and Johnny (Wendy) Ross; niece, Lynette (Chris) Young; and many great nieces and nephews and extended family members.
We are at complete peace knowing our dad and Papa is healed, whole and with Jesus. We will all be reunited one day.
A celebration of Bill’s life will be at 1:00pm, Monday, April 17, 2023, at Quail Springs Baptist Church Chapel.
