Henry E. 'Gus' Gustafson

September 18, 1916 ~ January 28, 2010

Henry E. 'Gus' Gustafson was born September 18, 1916 in Dayton, Iowa and departed this life on Thursday, January 28, 2010.

He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Jo Smith Gustafson, his parents Abraham Ernest Gustafson and Helen Hedlund Gustafson, brother Paul J. Gustafson and sisters Astrid M. Gustafson King and Martha V. Gustafson Sarazin.

Gus grew up on a farm near Brule, Wisconsin. In August 1941, he became employed at the Darr School of Aeronautics in Ponca City and soon after at Tinker Field. In September 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps Reserve and was called to active duty August 1943. He completed flight training October 1944 with commercial pilot and glider pilot rating and was assigned to the 440th Troop Carrier Group serving Europe.

He returned to Tinker AFB Base in 1945 where he worked until he retired in June 1973. Gus resided in Midwest City since 1952. He was a member of Midwest City First Baptist Church and Siloam Masonic Lodge.

Gus married Betty Jo Smith October 17, 1948 and they were blessed with two children.

Survivors include daughter Susan K. Gustafson King and son-in-law Steven F. King, son David H. Gustafson, grandchildren Scott Alan King and Sarah Ann King Busniewski, sister Elizabeth H. 'Bette' Gustafson Pearson, and many nieces and nephews.

Family will receive visitors on Sunday afternoon, January 31st from 2 PM to 4 PM at Barnes Friederich Funeral Home, 1820 S. Douglas in Midwest City. Service will be held at Midwest City First Baptist Church at 2 PM, Monday, February 1st. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, the American Heart Association or charity of choice.
