James Melvin Gross

James Melvin Gross
September 30, 1936 ~ May 7, 2014 (age 77)

James Melvin Gross, 77, of Norman entered Heaven on Wednesday, May 7, 2014.  He was born weighing only 3 lbs. 15 oz.. On September 30, 1936 in Hutchinson, Kansas to Henry Luther and Esther May (Marble) Gross. Defeating all odds and fourteen surgeries later, he began to walk by age 5.  This gave evidence to his inevitable strength and willpower at an early age which he carried with him for the rest of his life.

James graduated from Hutchinson High School and the National School of Aeronautics.  He later drove a taxi, had a delivery service, and retired after being an advocate for the disabled at a medical supply company for many years. He had a passion for helping others especially the disabled and was first and foremost a family man.  He enjoyed gardening, building cabinets and shelf units, and watching football and basketball games.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Harold Gross. James is survived by the mother of his daughters, Jean Clark; his three daughters, Joy Tomek-Dionne and husband Darrel of Norman; Julie Collins and husband Sean of Noble, and Jana Canfield and husband Terry of Norman; his brother, David Gross and wife Betty of Kansas; his sister, Ruth Miller of Hutchinson, Kansas; his five grandchildren, Zachary, Carissa, Angela, Kimberly, and Brandi; and his three great grandchildren, Katelynn, Derin, and Wyatt.

Memorial services will begin at 10 a.m., Monday, May 12, 2014 at the Havenbrook Funeral Home Chapel, 3401 Havenbrook Street in Norman.

Arrangements for James and his family were placed in the care of the Vice family at the Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman. Online condolences may be shared atwww.HavenbrookFuneralHome.com.
