Steve E. Groom, 68, passed away December 18, 2015, in Guthrie, Oklahoma, following a battle with Melanoma.
He is remembered by his wife of 48 years, Jean Groom, his daughter, Cathie Groom Smith (husband, Chris Smith) of Houston, Texas, and son, David Groom (wife, Jenny Groom) of Los Angeles, California; and their families, including five grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Ron Groom and Vaughn Groom, as well as two sisters, Barbara Chapman and Dollie Canfield.
Born Oct 20, 1947, the son of John and Dollie Ethel Groom, Steve was raised mostly in Guthrie, Oklahoma. A graduate of Guthrie High School, class of 1965, and Central State University (now UCO) and with a passion for education and service, Steve taught school for 29+ years throughout the Guthrie Public School System; including 6th grade at Banner, 7th-8th grades at Guthrie Jr. High and English and Computer Science for 9th-12th grade at Guthrie Sr. High School. He was an early adopter of computer science and introduced the Guthrie Public School system to computer technology and the educational benefits and practicalities of the computer sciences. He was also the assistant manager of the Beacon Drive-In and the Melba Theater.
Steve was active in the community through the Guthrie Round Up Club, activities at the Masonic Childrens Home, and hosting chess and tech clubs for students. He was a follower of Christ and an active member of the First Southern Baptist Church of Guthrie, where he attended and served with his family until prevented from doing so due to his health.
Steve loved his family, traveling, camping, and tinkering with computers and technology right up until his health prohibited such things. He was extremely grateful for getting to spend this past Thanksgiving in the company of his wife, daughter, son, and their families and grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in Steve's honor and memory to: Gideon's International or the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missionaries (c/o First Southern Baptist Church, Guthrie), or KUCO Classical Radio Station, University of Central Oklahoma, Edmond, OK.
