Vernon Lee Green

May 28, 1931 ~ October 1, 2014

Vernon Lee Green, Sr., 83, of McAlester, died Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at Oklahoma Heart Hospital in Oklahoma City.

A Gathering of Remembrances will be held at 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 4 at Bishop Chapel of Memories with military honors provided by The Robert B. Thomas, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1098. Service arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service.

Vernon was born on May 28, 1931 in Elnora, Indiana to Ralph & Zibbie Kranning Green. He attended schools in Indiana and North Carolina.

Vernon joined the United States Marines in 1951 and was in the Korean Conflict and in the Vietnam War. He was stationed overseas and all over the United States. Vernon received an honorable discharge in 1972.

He married Evelyn Eller on January 8, 1955 in Ragan, Texas. After the service Vernon was a painting contractor and then later became a furniture restorer and worked in that field for 28 years.

He was a past member of the Lions Club; The Robert B. Thomas Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #1098; and was a life member of the American Legion. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association and was a Mason in McAlester. Vernon was a nationally ranked skeet shooter and was The North Carolina Champion. In later years he loved to fish.

Survivors include his wife: Evelyn Green of the home; daughter & son-in-law: Shelby & Bob Rogers of McAlester; sons & daughters-in-law: Vernon, Jr. & Jennifer Green of McAlester, Gary & Lynn Green of Coppell, Texas; grandchildren: Kenna Green, Leigh Anne Green, Andrew Green, Neil Green, Christopher Rogers, Hanna Jewel; great-grandchildren: Mercedes Jewell, Karis Rogers, Christian Rogers, Daxton Rodgers; brother-in-law & spouse: Don & Ima Eller of McAlester; and numerous nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Ray Green & Donald Green; sisters: Jean Edwards & Vivian Wilson (twin sister); and a granddaughter: Kelsey Jean Green.
