Glenn Everett Green was born March 15, 1938 to Clyde B. and Mildred (Jencks) Green on an 80 acre farm 5 miles south of Cheyenne. He left this life on March 12, 2019 at his home in Cheyenne, OK at the age of 80 years, 11 months, and 28 days to be with his heavenly Father.
Glenn spent all of his childhood years in Roger Mills County. After Graduating from Cheyenne High School in 1956, Glenn attended Southwestern Oklahoma State College at Weatherford, Oklahoma and graduated in 1960 with a major in Mathematics and a minor in Physics. Following graduation, Glenn spent 18 months working on a master’s degree at Oklahoma State University.
In February 1962, Glenn joined the Air Force. He completed Basic Training then Officers Training School as a Distinguished Graduate. He was then commissioned a Second Lieutenant on June 26, 1962. While in training in Biloxi, Mississippi, he met and married Wanda Moore from Chattanooga, Tennessee, on Nov 3, 1962.
Glenn and Wanda were stationed in Minot, North Dakota and then in Corvallis, Oregon where their first two children, Nila and Travis, were born. First Lieutenant Green was working with the SAGE computerized aircraft control system. Glenn’s mission was to control fighter aircraft to protect the United States from the Russian Bomber threat.
Because of his degree in mathematics, Glenn was selected to be part of the first group of officers to start a new career field in computer programming. In 1965 Glenn was assigned to the Cheyenne Mountain complex in Colorado Springs, where he programmed computers for Satellite tracking. Captain Green was awarded an Air Force Commendation Medal for his innovative accomplishments using the Philco computers. Glenn and Wanda’s other two children, Melinda and Randy, were born there in Colorado. Following this, in 1969, the Family moved to Cheyenne, Oklahoma for one year while Glenn was stationed in the Arctic as a representative of the Air Force to DEW line radar stations in Northern Canada and Greenland. He received another Air Force Commendation Medal for his outstanding service there.
Glenn was then stationed in Biloxi, MS, teaching IBM 360 computer programming. For his accomplishments in Biloxi, Major Green received the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal. In 1974, Glenn was assigned to College Station, Texas where he achieved his Master’s Degree in Computer Science from Texas A & M University in 1975. Next, Glenn was stationed at the Air Force Inspection and Safety Center in San Bernardino, California, as director of the computer center. Lt. Colonel Green was awarded a second Meritorious Service Medal for his work there.
In 1979, the family moved to Blanchard, Oklahoma while Glenn spent another year in the Arctic as Commander of Murphy Dome Air Force Station in Northern Alaska. For this, Glenn was awarded Another Meritorious Service Medal. Glenn was then assigned to Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma, in 1980 as director of the Computer Center for the AWACS aircraft system. Eighteen months later on April 1, 1982, Lt. Colonel Green retired from the Air Force ending a 20 year distinguished career. Glenn was also awarded the National Defense Service Medal, and four Outstanding Unit Medals.
Glenn taught at Oklahoma University and worked on a Doctors Degree in Computer Science. He completed all requirements for a PHD except his dissertation.
In 1988 Glenn and Wanda moved back to Roger Mills County south of Cheyenne. Glenn worked as an operator for the TV station, OETA, in Cheyenne. He taught Computer Science at Southwestern OK State University in Weatherford, OK and then worked part time for the GPRMC hospital in Elk City, OK programming their hospital computer system.
Glenn was a regular at the Senior Citizen’s Center. He served on the Cheyenne Hospital board, and recorded the Old Settlers Reunion. He served in many ways at the First Baptist Church in Cheyenne. Glenn became an avid runner, training in the city park and participating in many 5K events in the area including one on his 80th birthday.
Glenn was preceded in death by his parents Clyde and Mildred; wife Wanda; daughter, Melinda; grandson, Roderick Land; brother Murl; and sisters Dixie Hall, JoAnna Gonzales, and Joy Cruze.
Glenn is survived by his daughter Nila Land husband Robert, their children Kelsi Wooten husband Tristian; Whitley Hale husband Trey, children Blakely and Linkyn; Joshua Land; and Michael Land, all Cheyenne, OK; Son Travis Green wife Andrea, their children, Gracen, Austin, TX.; Mary Drummond, daughter Hope, Virginia Beach, VA; Hannah Thompson husband Eric, San Antonio, TX; Son Randy Green, Cheyenne, OK; his sisters Faye Robinson of Cheyenne, OK, and Deana (Nanely) Green of Killeen, TX; He leaves 3 children, 7 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Memorial Services will be held Saturday, March 23, 2019 at Cheyenne First Baptist Church with Pastor Randy Green and Dr. Hooper officiating.
