Saginaw Morgan Grant

Details of death: Died at a care facility in Hollywood, California of natural causes at the age of 85.
Saginaw Grant was a Native American character actor known for roles in TV shows and movies
including “Breaking Bad” and “The Lone Ranger.”

After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War, Grant began acting in the 1980s. He became known for appearances on a wide variety of TV shows, including “Nash Bridges,” “My Name is Earl,” “American Horror Story,” “Community,” and “Breaking Bad.” He had a regular role on the 1993 TV drama “Harts of the West.” On the big screen, Grant played Chief Big Bear in “The Lone Ranger” (2013) and appeared in other movies including “The World’s Fastest Indian” (2005). Grant was also a hereditary chief of the Sac & Fox Nation of Oklahoma, and he was active on the pow wow circuit.

Grant was born at the Indian Hospital in Pawnee, Oklahoma, the son of Sarah (née Murray) and Austin Grant.. He was a member of the Sac and Fox Nation of Oklahoma. His mother's ancestry was from the Iowa and Otoe-Missouria tribes of Oklahoma..  He was a United States Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War.

Grant appeared in numerous films and television shows. Saginaw Grant played Grey Cloud, an ally of Indiana Jones, opposite Harrison Ford in a 1993 episode "Mystery of the Blues" of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. He played the Gatekeeper in the 1999 film, "Purgatory." He played Chief Big Bear in the 2013 film The Lone Ranger. The same year, he appeared as a man who sells his truck to Walter White in the Breaking Bad episode "Ozymandias."
From 2012, the actor was a prominent member of the American Indian Advisory Board at the San Diego International Film Festival.

Grant was awarded the American Legacy Award from the San Diego Film Festival and the lifetime achievement award from the Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation and a Living Legend Award by the Native American Music Awards (NAMA). In 2018, his album "Don't Let the Drums Go Silent" won the Record of the Year from NAMA.
 On July 27, 2021, Grant died in his sleep. His friend and publicist said the cause of death was natural causes
