Memorial services for Alva Gleaves will be held at Arden Road Baptist Church on Monday, July 13, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Dr. Bob Weger will officiate.
Private family burial will be held at Dreamland Cemetery, Canyon.
Local arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia.
Services are under the direction of Whinery Funeral Service, Sayre, Oklahoma.
Al was born June 1, 1943 in Elk City, Oklahoma.
He grew up in the Berlin/Grimes communities and was married to Joyce Evalena Baker in 1961 at the Berlin Community Center.
They lived in Sayre before living in and working on Joyce's parent's home place. They moved to Strong City, Oklahoma where they managed a dairy farm until moving to Claude, Texas and later to Happy, Texas where Al worked for the Wallace Ford company. Al and Joyce moved to Canyon and Al began working on the farm for Delmer Durrett.
Joyce preceded him in death in 1974.
Al married Sharon Kay Wise in Canyon on September 22, 1974 and they continued to make their home north of Canyon.
He owned and operated Al's Garage and Welding, as well as A&L Services before going to work for West Texas Gas in 1995, where he was currently employed as a service technician.
Al was known for his hard working mentality and his love for family and friends.
He learned to fly, and enjoyed riding motorcycles, horses, and traveling with Sharon.
His greatest joys were his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was a member of Grace Community Church and had been a member and officer of the Randall County Sheriff's Posse.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joyce; one son, Alva Alton "Junior" Gleaves; one infant daughter, Virginia Fay; and one infant sister.
He is survived by his wife Sharon; one daughter, Cyndie Cooley and husband Gene of Amarillo; one sister, Glenda Whinery and husband Brad of Elk City, Oklahoma; two brothers, Wayne Gleaves and wife Freda of Hobbs, New Mexico; and Lee Gleaves and wife Debbie of Lawton, Oklahoma; three grandchildren, Jimmy Allen and wife Shelly of Canyon; Aleshia Cardenas and husband Joe of Amarillo; and John Allen of Midland; three great grandchildren, Marcus Deshane Allen, Jaylee Marchelle Allen and Lily Isabella Cardena; his father-in-law Ernest Wise; along with a host of other relatives and friends.
