Sara Jean (Johnson) Gillaspie, 76, of Enid, Oklahoma, died and went peacefully to join Dan, her beloved husband of nearly 50 years, in the arms of her Heavenly Father on December 2, 2024, at Comfort Care Homes in Newton, Kansas.
She was born on March 19, 1948, in Grinnell, Iowa, and grew up and graduated high school in Montezuma, Iowa.
On September 26, 1970, she married Danny Gillaspie of Deep River, Iowa, and joined him as he began his career in the Air Force. They would uproot often as Dan's military assignments sent them all over the world, finally putting down roots in Enid, Oklahoma, in 1985.
During her life, Sara was a homemaker, doula, gardener and a baker. But her love for Jesus Christ and her job as a wife and the mother of their 3 children was the most important. After her kids grew up and had kids of their own, her title changed to "Ama". She and Papa loved taking the grandkids on "5 year-old trips" to a destination of the kid's choosing. Branson, MO, and Sanibel, FL, were favorites.
She loved her cats, tending her garden, 4th of July reunions with the family and George Strait.
Sara was preceded in death by her husband, Danny Gillaspie; her parents, Carmen and Hazel (Gregory) Johnson. She is survived by her 3 children: daughter Lara Gillaspie of Newton, KS, daughter Emily (John) Buller of Kremlin, OK, and son Charles "Charlie" (Darlene) Gillaspie of McAlester, OK; SISTERS: Nancy Ferguson and Virginia Ogan; GRANDCHILDREN: Tim (Taylor) Jantzi; Allison (Wyatt) Roth; Joshua Jantzi; Haven (Cody) Faris; Garret Helfrich (Kayloni Hamm), Jessica Buller, Samuel Buller, and Jacob Buller; Colton Gillaspie and Cooper Gillaspie; 8 GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN; IN-LAWS: Susie (Duane) Steinkraus; Sharon (Bill) Harriman; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends.
Services will be held at a later date in Iowa.
Memorial donations may be sent to: Comfort Care Homes in Newton, KS, or Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church in McAlester, OK.
