Ernest Alan Gentry, 79, of Sperry, OK, was born October 23, 1945, in Decatur, IL, to Ernest Wilford Gentry and Joan Barbara (Kalassa) Gentry. He passed away September 23, 2025, in Sperry, OK.
Ernest was a man of multiple talents; he was a teacher, computer repairman, machinist, and courier. He enjoyed hiking, watching various documentaries, reading, going for drives, and talking about math and science to people. He was raised by his grandparents Erney and Kate Gentry in Decatur, IL. Ernest joined the Army after high school and was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War. He met and married Jean Morris in 1973 while attending college in Collegedale, TN. Ernest went on to graduate from Southern Missionary College with a bachelor's degree in 1977. He worked as an educator for a few years after college and then as a computer repairman in Houston, TX during the 80’s. After moving to Oklahoma in 1990, Ernest worked as a machinist from 1992-2015 at Mingo Manufacturing for a total of 23 years. After retiring from Mingo Manufacturing, he started working part time as a courier at Freedom Express in 2017. He worked there until May of 2025, when he suffered a massive stroke.
He is survived by his children, David Gentry and wife, Kandice, and Charla Hester and husband, Bill; grandchildren, Jewell Gentry, Aiden Gentry, Gabe Gentry, and Charlize Hester; sisters, Marlene Hobbe, and Barbara Hutcheson; numerous nieces and nephews living across the country in CA, OK, AR, IL and FL; multiple cousins as well in IL, OH, and CT; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Joan Gentry; sister, Dorothy Hopkins; brother, Chester “Johnny” Gentry; nephew, Daniel Childress; and Jean Morris, the mother of his children.
Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Three Angels Seventh-day Adventist Church, PO Box 356, Owasso, OK 74055.
Arrangements were entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home, Sperry.
