Phillip E. “Phil” Garrett
June 18, 1938 ~ December 16, 2019 (age 81)

Phillip E. “Phil” Garrett passed away December 16th, 2019 at the age of 81. He was born at home June 18th, 1938 in Sayre, Oklahoma to parents Floyd “Willie” and Kate Garrett. Phil traveled most of this life doing what he loved most, training race horses. He met first wife Edith Wingo in Raton, NM. Together they had Cindy, Cheryl, Floyd D, and Steve Garrett. Later in life he met second wife Mary Lou Wiseman. They moved to Sayre, Ok. to raise sons; Robert, Hud, and Jud Garrett.

He was a well-known quarter horse and thoroughbred owner and trainer, an over all hard worker from a young age. He trained horses for the late Hall of Famer Walter Merrick. Phil had a long history with several famous race horses which included Easy Jet, Three Bars, Lena’s Bar, Little Lena Bars and Delta Rose. His stats include over 3,000 plus starts, with over 400 plus wins. He worked with world renowned bloodlines; his training played a great part in racing history. He trained race horses that set world records. His career started in the 1950’s and continued on into the early 2000’s.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents Floyd William and Katie (Cubine) Garrett; four siblings Bill Garrett, Mary Dye, Virginia Mae “Jenie” Beats, Helen Stine, wife Edith Wingo and his son Steve Garrett. He is survived by his two daughters and four sons; Cindy Garrett, Cheryl Tibljas & husband Richard, Floyd D Garrett & wife Kristi, Robert Garrett & wife Susan, Hud Garrett & wife Tonya and Jud Garrett & wife Melissa. As well as ex-wife Mary Lou Garrett, 15 grandkids and 11 great grandkids. He was greatly loved by his family and will be missed most for his story telling and ability to make his family laugh.
