Martin Thomas Gardner

Martin Thomas Gardner
April 20, 1980 ~ December 24, 2014 (age 34)

Martin Thomas Gardner was born April 20, 1980 in Bowling Green, Ohio and departed this life on December 24, 2014 in Norman, Oklahoma.

Martin’s passion was anything and everything related to music.  He was outstandingly gifted in music theory and arranging, plus a talented French horn and trumpet player.  He graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Music in Composition in 2005.  While at OU, Martin played in numerous ensembles, including the Sooner Showmen and the Pride of Oklahoma.  Martin felt incredibly privileged to have played with the Pride when OU won the 2000 National Championship.  Additionally, he was a volunteer for Bugles Across America, playing “Taps” for veterans’ funerals.  He continued playing music in church and also taught trumpet lessons. In addition, he was an integral member of the St. Michaels Episcopal Church choir, and a former member of the Oklahoma Masters Chorale.  Before his death, he was studying conducting with Dr. William Wakefield and conducted the St. Michael’s Choir in Tschesnokoff’s “Salvation is Created.”  His other interests included reading, gaming, and OU Football.  He was an astonishing conversationalist and was admired for his kind soul and calming nature.

Martin was preceded in death by his grandparents, Martin and Charlotte Gardner and William Wylie, Sr.

He is survived by his parents, Jim and Amy Gardner, brother Will Gardner, sister Katie Gardner, grandmother Helen Wylie, uncles Bill (Lori Holden) and Jack Wylie (Tracy Almester) and Tom Gardner, and cousin Aleha Almester.

Memorial will be Sunday, January 4th and begin at 2:00pm, at Saint Michaels Episcopal Church, 1601 W. Imhoff Rd., Norman, OK 73072 with a reception following.

The family asks that memorials be made to the Saint Michaels Choir fund or the charity of their choice.
