On March 11, 2020, Billy H. Furgerson left his earthly home for his eternal home in heaven. Billy was born October 25, 1923 in Shawnee, OK to William and Octa Jean Furgerson. Shortly after his birth, his family moved to Calvin, OK, where Billy grew up and graduated as valedictorian from Calvin High School. He served in the US Air Corps and was stationed in the European theatre during World War II. After returning from the war, Billy enrolled at the University of Oklahoma and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business in 1949. On November 25, 1949 he married Ida Mae Sutterfield in Ada, OK and enjoyed 68 years of marriage, before her death on October 13, 2018.
Billy worked at Gulf Oil Corporation for 34 years in human resources in Oklahoma City, OK. After retirement, Billy’s life remained full of commitment to family, loyalty to OU football, love of fishing, and sense of humor. He was always known for his love of Christ, faithfully serving as a deacon and Sunday School teacher and volunteering as a chaplain assistant at the Oklahoma Jail & Prison Ministries. He is survived by two daughters, Pam (Bill) Malloy, Santa Ynez Valley, CA and Paula McClendon, Rockwall, TX; four granddaughters, Kelly (Jack) Wright, Kari (Brian) Jones, Sara Malloy, and Rebekah (Ryan) Malloy-Riemer; and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and sister, Jenell Gaddy, Phoenix, AZ.
A celebration of life service will be held at Mercer Adams Funeral Service, 3925 N. Asbury Avenue, Bethany, OK, Tuesday, March 17, 2020 at 11am. A reception will follow. Burial will be private. On October 13, 2018, in Heath, TX, Ida Mae Furgerson left this world and entered eternity to be with her Heavenly Father. Ida Mae was born on June 13, 1931 in Stuart, OK, to Winford and Cora Sutterfield. She was the 5th of 10 children and loved playing basketball in high school.
On November 25, 1949, she married Billy H. Furgerson in Ada, OK, after only knowing him for 5 months. They were married for 68 years. She and Billy lived in several cities throughout Billy’s early career with Gulf Oil Corporation—Lyons, KS, Claflin, KS, Russell, KS, and Tulsa, OK, and final move to Oklahoma City, OK 62 years ago.
Ida Mae worked 13 years as an administrative assistant at Mayfair Baptist Church and then 29 years at Lillian Strickler’s Lamp and Lighting in Oklahoma City. She was extremely talented in decorating homes and designed and produced numerous custom lamps and lampshades for many customers throughout Oklahoma.
She loved to garden, sew, and cook and was always eager to open her home to friends and family. She volunteered in the nursery during Sunday School for over 30 years and was a volunteer at Deaconess Hospital for 7 years.
Ida Mae is survived by her husband, Billy; two daughters and sons-in-laws, Pam and Bill Malloy, Buellton, CA and Paula and Mike McClendon, Rockwall, TX; four granddaughters, Kelly Wright, Round Rock, TX, Kari Jones, McKinney, TX, Sara Malloy, Washington, DC, and Rebekah Malloy-Riemer, Los Angeles, CA; 6 great-grandchildren, Madison, Hadley, Taylor and Brooklyn Jones, Zane and Ella Wright; four siblings, Theola Ritter, Spring Hill, TN, Jimmie VanSchuyver, Wanette, OK, Leon Sutterfield, Moore, and Dee Lemon, Oklahoma City; and numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 4 brothers, Dewey, Elmer “Red,” Calvin, and Donald Ray Sutterfield, and sister, Laura Sue Moore.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00pm on Thursday, October 18 at Mercer-Adams Funeral Service, 3925 North Asbury Avenue, Bethany, OK. A reception will follow. Viewing and burial will be private.
