Hugh F. Furche

August 5, 1933 ~ March 20, 2010

Hugh F. Furche died March 20, 2010 at Somerset Assisted Living Residences in Oklahoma City. Services will be held at Barnes and Friedrich at 2:00 on Friday, Mar 26.

Furche was born in Dallas, TX in 1933 and adopted by Frank and Maggie Furche at the age of six months. He grew up and graduated from high school in Sherman, TX, where he competed on the boxing team.

Furche began his career as a B-47 Stratojet maintainer and officially retired in 1998 from Tinker AFB after 45 years of federal service. His career began with assignments to Amarillo AFB, TX; Barksdale AFB, LA; and Dyess AFB, TX. In 1961 he came to Tinker, where he spent the next nine years assigned to the 2854th Air Base Group's Aircraft Maintenance Division as a maintenance technician. His other duties included flying with an inspection arm of the FAA based at Tinker. During the next three years he served tours at Cam Ranh Bay Air Base, South Vietnam; U-Tapao Air Base, Thailand; and Grand Forks AFB, ND. He returned to Tinker in October 1972 as a Non-Commissioned Officer in charge of the Tinker FAA Maintenance Section. The FAA mission at Tinker ended, and Furche became maintenance superintendent for the Transient Alert Branch. Chief Master Sergeant Hugh Furche ended his Air Force career on December 31, 1979. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign and Service medals. F

urche signed on with the Aircraft Production Division, as a civilian, in October 1980 and worked on the C/KC-135 Post Dock crews until 1982. He transferred to the Aircraft Maintenance Control Center as a controller, and in 1985 became supervisor. He later moved to the Aircraft Production Engineering Section in 1988. Furche maintained an active interest in, and support of, education, completing an Associates Degree in Aircraft Maintenance Technology from the Community College of the Air Force and an AA degree in Psychology from Rose State Community College. He completed 'many hours' toward a degree in Industrial Safety at the University of Central Oklahoma. He strongly encouraged others to pursue education, especially his granddaughters. Furche was an active member of the Central Oklahoma Clown Association, Veterans of Foreign War, and Air Force Sergeants Association.

During his retirement years, he also enjoyed dancing, watching his granddaughters play basketball and son play baseball, and traveling. He loved taking cruises with friends and family. He was especially proud of cruises with his granddaughters, Melissa and Jamie Furche, and special friend, Dr. Donna Guinn. Hugh Furche was surrounded by caring friends and loving family.

Surviving Furche are his son and daughter-in-law, Don and Kelly Furche, granddaughters, Melissa Furche, Jamie Furche, and Lindsay Sutton, great-granddaughters, Kamryn and Kynlee Sutton, and his sister, Mary Lockhart. He was lovingly cared for by his former wife, Sherry Furche, during the last few years of his life.
