Enid, OK - A memorial service for Robert "Joe" Frei, 87, of Enid, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009, at Central Christian Church. The Rev. John McLemore and Shorty Unruh will officiate. Burial will be 3 p.m. in Hardtner Cemetery, Hardtner, Kan., with military rites. Arrangements are by Anderson-Burris Funeral Home and Crematory.
He was born June 29, 1922, in Woods County to William Robert and Elsie Hauser Frei and died Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009, in Enid.
He attended Eldred School in Barber County, Kan., and Hardtner High School, graduating in 1941. He enlisted in the Navy on Oct. 10, 1942, and was discharged July 21, 1943. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps Oct. 22, 1943, and was discharged Feb. 18, 1946.
He married June Johnson Aug. 21, 1946, in Oswego, Kan. He farmed and ranched in Hardtner for seven years. They moved to Freedom, where he farmed and ranched until 1970. He worked for Woods County, District 2, retiring in 1984. They moved to Enid in 1991 and later to Golden Oaks Retirement Village.
He was a member of Central Christian Church, American Legion, Elks Lodge and Cowboy Storytellers.
Surviving are his wife, June; one daughter, Pamela Kay Rogers of Woodward; one son, Robert Herschel Frei of Alva; four grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by one brother, two sisters and three grandchildren.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Central Christian Church.
