Bettye Jean Fortune, age 80 of Lexington, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 22, 2015, at her home. Bettye was born November 20, 1934 in Wortham, TX, the oldest of 4 children born to John Samuel Gibbons and Jessie Mae Turner. She was raised in the Texas midland, eventually settling in Norman, OK where she attended school.
Betty married Delmer Dee Fortune on May 6, 1961. They made their home in Watonga for many years where Bettye worked as a beautician. They later purchased a small farm east of Lexington. Bettye worked hard helping Delmar on the farm. One by one, Bettye welcomed children into her home. She was a mother to many. She kept her children close.
Bettye loved sewing and made much of their clothing, and she also worked some doing alterations for Sharp Cleaners in Norman. Bettye enjoyed cooking and tending to her garden. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends, was an avid reader and never missed an opportunity to work a crossword puzzle. Bettye loved sports and especially little league, and she never missed one of her children’s games. She was a faithful member of the Spring Hill Free Will Baptist Church east of Lexington.
She was preceded in death by: husband, Delmer Fortune; daughter, Laverne Carter; parents, John & Jessie Gibbons and brother, Warren McKenzie
Bettye leaves behind: children, Darrell Fortune, Robert Fortune and wife Tiffany, Mark Fortune and wife Jennifer, Charles Fortune and fianc', Rhonda Mays; Deanna Billington, Leanne Gober, Rachelle Case, Bonnie Cooksey, Jenny Knox, Tyreena Schnitzler and Pat Smith; Brother, Bill Sallis and wife Barbara and Sister, Gaynell Walker; Numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, Several nieces and nephews and a host of other family and friends.
Memorial Services are scheduled for 12 PM Saturday, January 31st at the Spring Hill Free Will Baptist Church.
