Doyle Wright Fortney was born on December 11, 1933 in Louisville, KY to Bertha and Carl Fortney.
His older brother Bob and his twin brother & dear friend Dayle preceded him in death.
Over the course of his almost 83 years in this world, he accumulated stories that few can match. As a young man, he joined the United States Navy, and for the next 30 years he served his country, entering at the lowest enlisted rank and retiring as Commander. After retirement, he embarked on new careers in ministry and human resource management. He pastored churches in Louisville, Kentucky; Mount Carmel, Illinois; Highpoint, North Carolina; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Blackwell, Oklahoma. He did non-profit work for Bibles for the World in Chicago, Illinois and Christian Appalachian Project in eastern Kentucky. He also found time later in life to earn undergraduate and graduate degrees, and this education enabled him to serve both the private and public sector (Oklahoma State Dept. of Health, Pottawatomie Health Clinic) in the area of human resources.
He absolutely adored life, and his years were spent seeking out challenge after challenge and never getting tired of learning and growing as a person. But the heart of Doyle-s story is wrapped up in how he cared for others. His unlimited belief in people made them believe in themselves, and his extraordinary love for his family and friends will be missed so dearly. He loved his wife Loretta so. She was his co-conspirator and partner in adventure and life for 42 years. His children - Lawrence, Ken, Mark, Matt, Bill, Les, Justin, &Stef - and their spouses - Jeanne, Ashley, Dee, Jody, Aricela, Amanda, &Melissa - were his world. And oh good heavens how he loved his grandchildren - Taylor &Mary, Jesse, Max &Cassidy, Ashton, Joe, Ruby, Manuel, Reno, &Angel, and Eli - and the 10 great grandchildren and 5 great- great grandchildren. The love that he poured into being husband, father, and grandfather was extraordinary. It was a love that made us better people, that made us believe in the goodness in this world.
Memorial services to celebrate Doyle-s life will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at Smith Memorial Chapel with Reverend John Borrego officiating. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.
