Frances Rita (Novotny) Flanagan

August 20, 1921 ~ June 30, 2004

Frances Rita Flanagan was taken into the arms of the Lord on June 30, 2004, in Oklahoma City, in the presence of her family. She was 82 years, 10 months, and 10 days of age.

Frances was born August 20, 1921, and was left on the doorsteps of a Catholic convent in Guthrie, Oklahoma. The only parents she ever knew and the ones who raised her were Frank and Agnew Novotny of Pocasset, Oklahoma. She grew up in Pocasset and Chickasha. She graduated from high school at St. Joseph's Academy in Chickasha and attended the Oklahoma College for Women, where she was awarded a bachelor's degree when she was 19.

On her 20th birthday, August 20, 1941, she was married to Funston Flanagan. They were married for almost 63 years. When Funston went to military service during World War II, Frances followed him to Texas, returning to Chickasha when he went overseas. The family moved to Walters in August 1946, where they have resided ever since. Frances worked a few years at Ft. Sill. She was a member of the Walters McDowell Music Club and enjoyed participating in its activities. She also belonged to the Tuesday Canasta Club and greatly enjoyed playing canasta and being in the company of the other members.

In 1984, Frances was named Oklahoma Mother of the Year and served as a delegate to the National Convention in New Orleans. She took part in the Oklahoma Mother activities for many years.

Frances will be sorely missed by her husband of the home and her seven children: Kathleen Flanagan of Walters; Patricia Flanagan and her husband Bill of Yukon; Alice Loftin of Oklahoma City; Mary Glasgow and her husband Randy of Lawton; Michael C. Flanagan and his wife Sherri of Walters; Janis Darly and her husband Lon of Yukon; and Mark Flanagan and his wife Mechelle Ramsey Flanagan of Walters. She is survived by two sisters: Mary Bush of Placentia, California, and Elizabeth Shields of Manlius, New York. Frances had 19 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and 19 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, John Andrew, her parents, two brothers, and a sister. The Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, July 3, 2004, at 2 o'clock p.m., at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, in Walters, Oklahoma, under the direction of Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home in Walters.

A wake with rosary will be held on Friday, July 2, 2004, at 7 o'clock p.m., at Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home.
