On Nov. 20, 2019, three weeks before her 96th birthday, Juanita Maryalice (Scott) Fitz went to be with her Lord. She was born to William Oliver and Edna May (Laughrey) Scott on Dec. 12, 1923 near Fargo, OK on her grandparents homestead. She grew up near Fort Supply until April of 1935, when her family moved 3 miles NW of Woodward where her parents opened a service station and garage on the new highway to Fort Supply. She attended Woodward View School and Woodward High School where she played the clarinet in the band. While in high school, she met her future husband, Joe C. Fitz, but at the time, sparks did not fly for her! After graduating in May 1941, she attended Hills Business University in OKC. While in OKC, she reconnected with Joe and sparks DID fly! They were married April 5, 1942, in Woodward, after getting permission from their parents since they were only 18.
In Sept of 1942, she began employment at Tinker Air Material Command and worked Civil Service until March 1947 when she was 7 months pregnant with her first child. Through the years, as Volunteer Queen of America (dubbed by her family), she was involved in Red Cross Gray Ladies, Cub Scouts, President and Executive Director of the Girl Scout Council Topeka, Engineer Wives Auxiliary, Christian Womens Fellowship, PTA, Church Women United, League of Women Voters, Mental Health Association, High Fever Follies, Deaconess of First Christian Church of Topeka, Red Hats Society, Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council, Day at the Legislature and other activities with Oklahoma Council of Churches, General Federation of Womens Club (serving as State President 2004-2006), serving on the Board for High Plains Homeless Shelter, NW Area Disciples Women and all related events.
She loved traveling, volunteering, reading, author's luncheons and Let's Talk About It sponsored by the library. Juanita was always seeking to learn new things and experience new adventures. She taught her family forgiveness, acceptance, persistence, stubbornness and a love of learning. Juanita never considered anyone a stranger. She made a profound impact on so many lives.
Juanita joined her husband of 68 years, Joe C. Fitz, in Heaven. She is survived by her son, William Lane Fitz and wife Kim, daughters: Steva Lynne Davis and husband Larry, Jana Druann Hart and husband Ronnie, Janita Marcy Fitz and Kayla Jo Fitz; grandchildren: William Joseph Fitz, Scott Trent Fitz, Kimberly Mae Chandler and husband Jim, Kristi Ann Lacy and husband Chris, April Dawn Kerby, Brandon Todd Kerby and wife Gabriela, Travis Luke Kerby and wife Carey, Nika Briann Owings and husband Matt; Kira Richelle Bevis, Thomas Tyler Talley III; great grandchildren: Kaden Lane Fitz, Taylor Noelle Brown, Toren Lane Fitz, Olivia Ann Lacy, Kaitlynn Ashleigh Kerby, Amber Alyssa Keller, Cole Patrick Tustin, Alex Bachman Williams, Justin Hughes LoPresto, Ruth Faith Kerby, Cecelia Hope Kerby, Kennedy Kerby, Steel Kerby; great, great grandchild: Emmitt Cole Kerby.
A Celebration of Life will be held at First Christian Church, 1309 8th Street, Woodward, Oklahoma on Dec. 7, 2019 at 10am. In lieu of flowers, Juanita asked that donations be made to your local homeless shelter or White Horse Ranch for Girls, 40803 S. County Rd, Mooreland, OK 73852.
