Forrest Fisher, 97 year old Woodward resident, died Monday, November 25, 2019 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 2, 2019 in the Billings Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be held at 3:00 p.m. at the Graceland Cemetery in Meade, Kansas.
Henry Forrest Fisher was born on January 1, 1922 upstairs in grandma's house at Coldwater, Kansas. He loved telling the story that he fell down the stairs three times the first night! He was the oldest son of Emmert Hampton and Anna Marie (Lousch) Fisher. Forrest grew up in Boise City where (quituated) from the 7th grade in order to help on the family farm. Times were tough living in the Oklahoma panhandle during the Dust Bowl days and he still had vivid memories of those hard times, even having a cameo in the documentary (Black Blizzard). When he was 17 years old his father died of a sudden heart attack leaving Forrest to be the sole supporter of his mother and five siblings. After moving into town he worked in a butcher shop before being drafted into the Air Corps in 1942. Shortly thereafter he was one of 155,000 that were transferred into the Army as an infantryman. He served as a combat infantryman in Rhineland during which time he earned two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, American Theatre Ribbon, EAME Theatre Ribbon and a World War II Victory Ribbon. He was honorably discharged on March 30, 1946.
After returning stateside he was united in marriage to Dorothy Irene Smith on September 9, 1947 in Clayton, New Mexico. They established their first home in Boise City. Forrest began working in the oilfield which took them to various towns in Texas, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado, Texas and Oklahoma. He proudly worked as Drilling Superintendent for Noble Drilling supervising nine rigs in three states with 155 employees. Forrest moved his family to Woodward in 1964 where has remained since. He lost his wife to cancer at the young age of 42 on October 4, 1968. From that point on he was a single devoted father to his two young boys. Forrest was an avid roper and rodeo participant, he loved to spend time riding horses, going to ropings and rodeos but above all else he loved to dance the night away to Western Swing music. Until the age of 96 he still made dances within a 150 mile circle! He was a member of the Woodward Roundup Club and the USTRCA Old Timers Rodeo Association.
Forrest is survived by his two sons, Dan Fisher and wife Rhonda and Roger Fisher all of Woodward. Grandchildren: Danny Fisher Jr. of Oklahoma City, Logan Fisher and wife Brittany of Plano, Texas, Landon Fisher of Silverton, Texas, Wendi Carter and husband Dean of Okarche, Calli Habekott of Washington, Charlie Roles and wife Karen of Oklahoma City. Great-grandchildren: Danny (Trey) Fisher III, Wyatt Carter and wife Kimberley, Weston Carter, Chloe and Cooper Habekott; other family including his (harem) of girls from Faith Hospice whom he loved each and everyone dearly and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three sisters, and two brothers.
Memorial Contributions may be made to Faith Hospice with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
