Helen Finney, a long-time resident of Bartlesville, passed away June 10 in Dallas, only weeks short of her 98th birthday.
Helen Lucille (Brown) Finney was born July 16, 1920, in Coosa, Georgia, the daughter of Oscar D. Brown and Bursha Hurley Brown. When she was a young girl her family relocated to West Texas to farm cotton. After receiving her B.A. from Texas Woman's University in Denton she went to work as a secretary for Phillips Petroleum in Borger, Texas, where she met Herschel Dean Finney, then beginning his career as a mechanical engineer at Phillips. The couple married in Borger on June 13, 1943. Two days later they moved to Bartlesville, where their two daughters were born, Frances (Fran) in 1947 and Mary Lynn in 1952.
In addition to maintaining the Finney household and raising her daughters, Helen was active in numerous church, civic and social organizations. She was a member and Sunday school teacher at the First United Church of Bartlesville and active in the Methodist Church Women's Society. She was also a member of the AAUW, member and president of the Bartlesville Service League, a Girl Scout leader, and she participated in many bridge and book clubs. Helen enjoyed reading and socializing with others and was known for her sense of humor, her ability to draw people into conversation, and the flair with which she dressed.
After the death of her husband in 2011 Helen continued to live in the house she and Herschel had built on Robin Road, but in 2013 she moved to the Green Country Village retirement community. In 2017 she moved again to the Dallas area to be closer to her daughter Mary Lynn and her brother, O. D. Brown.
Helen is survived by her daughters Fran of Hood River, Oregon, her daughter Mary Lynn of Dallas, Fran's husband Buck and her brother O. D. Brown of Arlington, Texas. She is also survived by her close friend of over 70 years, Anne Platner of Bartlesville.
A memorial service for Helen Finney will be held at Bartlesville First Church on Friday, June 29 at 11 am. Contributions in Helen's memory may be made to Bartlesville First Church.
