Ernest Dunbar "Ernie" Fair

February 6, 1914 ~ June 24, 2007

Memorial Services for Ernest Dunbar "Ernie" Fairweather, 93, of Hominy, were held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church in Hominy with Katherine Ramsey officiating under the direction of Nichols Funeral Home of Fairview.

Ernest Dunbar "Ernie" Fairweather was born on February 6, 1914 in Montrose, Scotland to Charles and Sarah Jean Edwards Fairweather. Ernie departed this life on June 24, 2007 at the Fairview Regional Medical Center in Fairview.

His family immigrated to the United States in 1921 and settled in Iola, KS, where his father was the golf pro. Ernie became a naturalized citizen of the USA in 1935.

Ernie graduated in 1933 from Iola High School and attended Iola Junior College. He started his career in retail during his high school years. Ernie worked for the J.C. Penney Co. and was transferred to Searcy, Arkansas. While in Searcy, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was assigned to the crew of the B-29 "Jack Pot as the C.F. C. gunner. He was stationed on the Island of Tinian in the Marianas. After WWII, Ernie resumed his career with the J.C. Penney Co. in Searcy, AR. He was later transferred to manage stores in Hominy, Perry, Chickasha, Oklahoma.

After 32 years of service with the J.C. Penney Co., Ernie retired in 1965. Ernie and Louise moved their family back to Hominy where he became the Department Store Manager for the Pioneer Store. Ernie retired again in 1975.

Ernie was a very active member of the Presbyterian Church. He was a lifetime member serving in many capacities of the church. He was a 50 plus year member of the Rotary Club, a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award in December of 200, active in the Chamber of Commerce, American Legion and various community committees.

Ernie was married to Fern Seymour in 1940 in Iola , KS. Fern died from complications with diabetes in 1951. Ernie met and married Louise Drummond Moore, along with her daughter Sally in 1954. Ernie officially adopted Sally in 1955 in Perry, OK. While living in Perry 3 children were born to Ernie and Louise, Mark Ernest, Susan Jean, and Charles "Cha" Scott who became the apples of his eye. His children remember their Dad as a man who never raised his voice. He exposed them to the wonders of life through the eyes and heart of a kind and generous father.

Louise died of complication with cancer in 1987. Ernie then married Leva Swim Drummond in August of 1988. Leva died of complications of heart disease in 2006.

Ernie is survived by his children, Sally Barrington and husband Mack, Mark Fairweather and friend Janet Roberson, Susie Martens and husband Erland, Chas Fairweather and wife Chrissie along with grandchildren Jennifer and Chad Barrington, Caroline, Chase, and Corbin Fairweather, Mark and Maggie Martens, 1 niece Jan West, 2 nephews Charlie Fairweather, and "Big" Jim Fairweather.

Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, sister Stella Murry, brothers Walt and Eddie Fairweather, nephew Jim Fairweather, and his grandson Bryce Martens.

Ernie's dedication to his family, church and community were the foundations of his life. He strived to live his life according to God's work found in Luke 6:31 "Do unto others as your would have then do to you" He treated others with respect and kindness. Staying true to his nature his last words were "Thanks a million anyway" and "I love you".

Memorials can be made in Ernie's name to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation Cancer Division or the First Presbyterian Church in Hominy with the Nichols Funeral Home P.O. Box 332 Fairview, Oklahoma 73737 serving as custodian of the funds.
