Catharine Vaughan Ewing

Catharine Vaughan Ewing
August 11, 1944 ~ June 20, 2020 (age 75)

Catharine (Cate) Vaughan Ewing of Norman, OK was born August 11, 1944 in Washington, D.C. to George McNaught Ewing and Alice J. Ewing. She died Saturday, June 20, 2020 in Norman, Oklahoma.

In 1966 Cate graduated from Rice University cum laude in political science. After earning an MA from Vanderbilt University and a PhD from the University of Oklahoma, she taught political science at Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma from 1972 to 1998. Among her areas of expertise were constitutional law, judicial and legislative processes; and Russian, Soviet, and Post-Soviet politics, history, and literature. Cate spoke French and Russian. At one point she served as Director of Phillips' Sweden Semester for students, and in that position led tours for Phillips students to western Europe and the (then) Soviet Union. Cate greatly valued the academic community and her relationships with colleagues and students at Phillips.

After Phillips closed in 1998, she earned a JD with honors from the University of Oklahoma and practiced law with a Chickasha law firm from 2002 until her retirement in 2016.

Cate was a life-long Presbyterian, a liberal Democrat and an active volunteer. At the time of her death she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Norman, where she had served as Deacon, Elder, Trustee, Thrift Shop worker, Clerk of Session, and on various committees. She enjoyed traveling, reading, gardening, walking and especially visiting with friends.

Cate is survived by her brother, Joel (Liz) Ewing of Bentonville, AR, niece Christie (Gary) Bowling, nephews Robert (Jeanette) Towster, David Ewing, Mark (Amy) Ewing, great-nieces Devin Ewing, Rebecca Ewing, Mia Ewing, Catherine Harp; great-nephews Henry Towster, Jack Towster, Tim Ewing, Chanse Harp and by many dear cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Alicia Ewing Towster.

In lieu of flowers, her wish was that donations be given to First Presbyterian Church of Norman OK (Thrift Shop), Stephenson Cancer Center, or a charity of your choice.

A memorial service will be scheduled at First Presbyterian Church in Norman at some later date when circumstances permit (possibly August).
