Monty Jay Evans

October 7, 1947 ~ December 9, 2021

Monty Jay Evans, 74, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, December 9, 2021.

Monty was born on October 7, 1947 in Morton, Texas. He was predeceased by his parents, Ginny and C.B. Evans, and his twin brother Meredith. Monty is survived by Vickie, his loving wife of 53 years, his daughter Robin (Eric), son Reagan (Leslie), and sister Kay. He will be forever loved and remembered as "Togo" by his five grandchildren, Morgan, Dakota, Chase, Tristan, and Laine. Monty also is honored with nieces, nephews, extended family and many dear friends from coast to coast.

Monty grew up in west Texas and later moved to Marietta. He graduated from Marietta High School in 1965. He spent his scholastic years playing high school football, water skiing, and motorcycling.

Monty met the love of his life, Vickie, in 1965. After they eloped in 1968, the couple moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, to pursue Monty's career in the United States Navy. Following his enlistment, Monty earned a degree in meteorology from the University of Oklahoma. After commissioning, he selected naval aviation and earned his Wings of Gold in 1974. He became an attack pilot flying with A-4 Skyhawk and A-7 Corsair for the US Navy. He served with squadrons VA-122, VA-153, VA-127 and VA-147 and made cruises aboard the USS Oriskany, USS Kitty Hawk, and USS Roosevelt. He retired with the rank of Commander following a 26-year career dedicated to the service of his country.

His love of aviation never waned, so Monty then flew commercially for Piedmont Airlines and later U.S. Airways. In the mid-90's, he began flying international routes in the Federal Express MD-11. In 2014, Monty hung up his wings and retired to the home he shared with Vickie on Lake Gaston, North Carolina.

Forever passionate about flying and his family, Monty always had time for both - although he never met a fish he didn't want to chase or a golf course he didn't strive to conquer. He enjoyed the camaraderie the Navy and the lake communities afforded him and devoted time to the Lake Gaston Lions Club and United Methodist Men. Monty was an exemplary leader who provided support, love, and encouragement to everyone he met, often with a dose of humor.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 18, at the Olive Branch United Methodist Church (4141 Gasburg Road, Gasburg, Virginia). A Celebration of Life reception will follow at the Lake Gaston Lions Club. He will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to Ladies of the Lake Cancer Support Team, the Evelyn D. Reinhart Guest House, or Tailhook Educational Foundation.
