ENID, Okla. � Gladstone "Stoney" Merritt Evans Jr. was born July 9, 1950, in Queens, N.Y., to Gladstone and Bernadine Evans and passed from this life on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at Integris Bass Baptist Health Center in Enid, Okla.
As a child he was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Amityville, where he was confirmed at age 10.
He graduated from Amityville Memorial High School in 1968. After completing high school he attended Farmersdale University until drafted into the United States Marine Corps in 1969, where he served as an office clerk while stationed in Quantico, Va.
In November 1969, he met and married Shirley Heard, and to this union three daughters were born.
After his tour of duty was completed, he and Shirley moved to New Jersey, where he worked as a social worker from 1972 to 1973, and then became a New Jersey police officer from 1973 to 1978.
He later moved to California, where he worked with his brother Garrett in the printer graphics field. He then went on to drive a bus for the city of San Jose, where he met Adalina �Lina� Vierra in October 1982.
After meeting Adalina, a romance occurred. They then moved to Oregon to chase their dreams, and from this they were blessed with four children.
In 1993, he and Lina moved to Oklahoma to be caregivers to her father.
In 1999, he and Lina united in marriage. He later became a member of First Christian Church in Cherokee, where he was a deacon.
In February 2012, he was diagnosed with lung cancer, to which he fought a noble fight.
Until his health failed, he was a handy man for Marian Goodwin and also drove a semi for Basic Energy.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lina; daughters, Tonya Reese (Steve), Retta Evans (Brian), Shandi Evans (Darrell), Geana Evans, and Giana Evans; sons, Michael Evans and Gladstone Evans III; sister, Jana Johnson (Keith); brothers, Garrett Evans (Marilyn), and Lee Isabell (Pam); 11 grandchildren; several adopted children; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Memorials may be given in his honor to Dexeus Relay for Life through Goodwin Funeral Home.
A celebration of life service for Stoney will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, at Bethel Baptist Church, Cherokee, with the Rev. Edward E. Jones Jr. officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Goodwin Funeral Home, Cherokee.
