Dixie Lucretia Albee Erickson, age 75, passed away Friday, January 7, 2011. Dixie was born in Guernsey, Wyoming on January 6, 1936 to D.E. “Doc” and Lillian Albee. She graduated high school in Guernsey in 1953. In 1955, she wed her husband of 55 years, Neil E. Erickson in Washington D.C. They lived in 6 states before settling in Norman, Oklahoma in 1985.
Dixie loved and excelled at academics – she holds a bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of California, Riverside, a bachelor's degree in studio art and art history and a master's degree in studio art from the University of Oklahoma.
While living in Norman, Dixie enjoyed sharing her love of the arts with others. Dixie has shown in individual and group exhibits throughout the United States. She has been active in numerous local arts and humanities programs and taught at both Oklahoma City Community College and Rose State College. She enjoyed working with the Summer Winds program, the Firehouse Art Center, and the Artist in Residents programs at local elementary schools. She also enjoyed exhibiting her art with her fellow artists in the 5 to 9 group. For Dixie, “Making art is the way I satisfy my curiosity, investigate the world around me, find answers to my puzzlements, discover what I believe or who I am”.
Dixie was a lifelong Christian and active member of every church she attended. In Norman, OK she enjoyed worshiping and attending bible study at the First Presbyterian Church. Dixie also cherished her time spent with her prayer circle.
Dixie is survived her husband, Neil of the home; two sons, Kurt Erickson and wife Laurie of Sparks, NV and Eric Erickson and wife Andreene of Rio Rancho, NM; one daughter, Julianne Bonnett and husband Paul of Grants, NM; one sister, Charlotte Corson of Baggs, WY; and four grandchildren, Brian Bonnett and wife Rebecca, Alex Erickson, Jana Bonnett and Anna Erickson. She is preceded in death by her parents; one son, Jon Charles Erickson in 1978; and one brother, Bruce Albee.
Memorial services will be held 11:00 A.M., Friday, January 14, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church, 555 S. University Blvd., Norman under the direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home.
